lol...i'll tell you the truth. for a 30k service it pays the tech like 6.5 hours...i can have it done in less than two. you can have a schedule 1 30k service which cuts out some of the stuff. but at 30k i would recommend doing the diff service, trans flush, coolant flush, oil change. If you don't need a alignment tell them not to do it...if you have replaced your air filter recently tell them not to do it. infiniti has some high mantinance costs

The SPECED services are the MINIMAL nothing extra and for sure it is not in the dealerships best interest to have your car last much beyond warranty.

The dealer shop breaks even on labor rate and all profit comes from parts sales. Remember the greeter, the service writer, the service manager, the TECH, the cleanup porter, the cashier, the credit card company, the coffee maker................all get paid from your hourly labor rate.

The only profitable labor operations are where the tech takes much less than the allocated time................short cuts and skipping steps.......so he can start another job while still being paid for yours.

As I am probably one of the oldest members on this site driving the best vehicle I have ever owned (2006 G35 Sedan 6 sp manual), I will voice you my opinion. Since 1966 I have purchased 3 Volkswagens, 3 Mazda's (one had a rotory engine), a 92 Lexus ES300 and my current 2006 G 35. All these vehicles had over 100k miles. The 1980 Diesel Rabbit and the 1988 Mazda 929 had over 200k miles. Not one of these vehicles ever went in for the factory recommended services.

What is the secret?

1- Check your vehicle weekly including all fluids and tire pressure.2- I change my oil every 3-4k miles myself using factory Nissan oil filters & have done so on all vehicles mentioned above. Charge all purchases of oil and filters so you'll have a record and document all oil changes in the warranty booklet.3- The air filter on the G35 is visible so when it gets dirty change it yourselfI changed mine at 15k and have a new one that I am going to change soon. I now have 26k miles & its starting to look a little dirty.4- There is an excellent post on this forum on changing the cabin filter.

All of the above are very easy to do and should save you a considerable amount of time and money.

Good Luck

People forget: brake, diff , ps, coolant, atf fluids and eventually ac oil.

Then wonder why things leak and fail.

It really depends on how many miles past warranty you want to start spending thousands in replacement parts. Do it yourself fluid changes [following correct proceedures] can double some component life surely a 50% increase.

Just presenting sales slips for the purchase of oil or filters doesn't prove you actually changed the fluids or filters. Nissan requires a legal document proving via VIN, mileage, and letterhead and signature that it was done on the particular vehicle.

I still don't understand how they can legally bill you for 6.5 hours when they only spend 2 hours working on it? It just doesn't seem right, or legal. But, I guess its standard practice. Are there any other industries that allow that?

Either way, I'll probably get my 30k done soon, but not at the dealership. Local shop that charges a heck of a lot less, and specializes in Japanese cars.

i dunno jack.

but brake and power steering fluid shouldn't have to be changed often, right? not before 100k?

which of the above mentioned fluids can you easily change yourself? I know the atf should be done at the shop. coolant too i'm guessing?

they can charge you that because that is how long it is supposed to take but some people are faster than others. such as: i can drain your diff fluid, your oil, and your coolant all at the same time while i balance your wheels.

it still makes no sense.

A technician works an 8 hour day lets say, and bills customers for 14 hours worth of work. The customers bill states the number of shop hours spent on your car, which is obviously not accurate.

If you're paying someone hourly, you dont pay for how long a job is "supposed" to take, no matter how efficient they are. You pay them for actual time spent on the car.

I agree 150% with you on that one!!

But, the fact is they do (or majority) charge you on what their lil booklet or policy is for fixing your car. Not the actual "real" time it took.

It ALWAYS works out to their benefit

Warranty pays less than actual required time to accomplish, therefore to breakeven the tech must learn to speed up and take short cuts on customer paid work..................to get his 40 hours of paid work.

When jobs are Taylorized [look it up = time and motion study], the hours are created by an EXPERT technican with every expense tool available, also they are practiced in the specific proceedure so the average tech can never accomplish the job time in the beginning. Sure after they've done it 25-100 times they might get close.

Remember the tech is only making $15-$25 per clock hour...............why a few twenties well placed get his attention EASILY.

If you don't pay for MORE than the minimal mainteance don't complain about after warranty failures is the mantra............be sure to sell before the warranty expires and hope the next owner doesn't come looking for you.

no...you pay for what industry standards says that "job" is supposed to take no matter how long it takes the tech. i wish we could get paid for how long i'm on the car...if that was the case i would spend 8 hours doin an oil change and get paide 8 hours

That is true it goes both way. How would we like if we got a slowepoke doing it and instead of $80 we pay $120?

That wouldn't be cool. They have the standard for it. That's how much we pay. We can try to make a deal but won't happen.
