I'm looking to make 300-350 whp, how much extra cash would i be looking at to get it to 300-350 whp? A turbo, injectors, and ECU? Studs would be nice for that power level. I'm looking for some educated advice on what it would cost to reliably run that kind of power every day on pump premium. I'm down to 2 engine choices, CA18DET or RB25DET, and im comparing price to run my power goal. I wish i was made of money but im not. The CA has its advantages for me, i'm sure it would give better mileage with its 700cc displacement deficit, and i know its gonna save me 150-200 pounds. So 300whp on a CA could be as good as 320whp on an RB25det right? My goals for this car, is to be able to beat or hang with a Z06 vette in a drag w/o compromising any drifting/handling abilities.

Thanks guys!

p.s. i hope nobody's a **** and makes a post just telling me to search cause i've read tons on here and such a post is pointless and rude

search, there I said it.

j/k:D

actually that probably would be the best way to find what you're looking for. Not on this site, but search around and see what shops have what at what price. For starters Taka Kaira has lots of CA stuff. Check them out

bigger turbo, larger injectors, fmic, exhaust, clutch, flywheel, dyno tuning, custom ecu chip, or you could go the stand alone route too...

you would probably need to rebuild alot of the stock componenets; like pistons, rods, bearings, etc. for 300whp...I've heard thats right at the limit of stock internals...so throw some forged pistons and rods in there too...ask boost_boy, Paul, or Ray...they're some of the higher hp CA18 guys on these boards:D

(oh and yes, do search some of the older threads for hints!)

FMIC, Exhaust, clutch and fliywheel are going to be common buys for any swap. I am fond of the SDS systems. I would hope the CA can take 350whp on stock internals...i mean the weaker-block SR can. Headbolts are a concern, as they tend to stretch in the 300hp neighboorhood.

i agree that a good condition CA18 can take 350whp on stock internals, but unforutunately many of our engines are older, higher mileage, and to be completely honest, in crappy condition overall...

I know mine came with a bad head and pistons (and chunks of metal in the combustion chamber?!?)...Paul's blew up when he started it, Nathan's threw a rod, and there are others that were crap too... IF you can find a good condition engine, then yes you can do 350 whp on stock internals...i'm just giving you a heads up to at least inspect your stuff before pushing it like that...

arp headbolts are relatively cheap and are a good investment for someone looking for 350hp (VG30 bolts if I remember right)

and yes SDS seems like the way to go if you're doing standalone. boost_boy and Ray are both using SDS with great results...Ray is making something in the 400 hp range! (boost might be too, I just can't remember:D)

Oh and welcome to the CA forum dareo...been seeing you quite a bit here lately :thumbup Sean

Thanks NeedCAforS13! i would buy a low mileage clip, something in the 19-40k mile range, i have sourced a few of them but i dont have the money right now. The turbo manifold on a CA18 is t25 flanged isnt it? If so, would a big t28 flow enough to get me 350whp?

Justbecause its low mleage doesn't mean its in good condition. Just take that into consideration

Thats a fine point tinted. Low mileage=less chance of poor condition, but its still an ancient engine. Oh well, rebuilding 4 cylinders is less than 6, and it means more power. Break it to upgrade i always say.

i dunno much about this "big t28" you and alfred are both talking about! what is it exactly?...i'd guess you could maybe get 275ish at the flywheel beating the crap out of an s15 t28bb...but maybe with this "big" one you'll get 300 whp, I dunno?

Be carefull to have the shop provide some sort of documentation of the mileage (i dunno maybe the gauge cluster?) because everyone claims to have "low mileage clips/motorsets"... just out of curiosity where are you looking at for motorsets. Just two I'd say stay clear of are Libero USA and Afterdark:tisk:

Supposedly, they take a T25 or T28, and do some voodoo magic and make it flow a ton with good response. The idea is, a good turbo w/o changing the manifold. I've been looking into it more just barely, http://www.machv.com/gart28tur95t.html is an example, 350-375hp they say, 900 bucks. I've seen them for less if you give them your t25 core.

I would get a new manifold for 350 whp... thats a lot of air (and high boost)

editI read the link I don't know, is there a flow chart availabe?

So a new manifold is for the best? I would rather be on a t3 flange anyway. Are CA manifolds readily availiable and reasonably priced?

yes!:D...hehe i forgot to mention that...get a new manifold asap!

they are kinda hard to find, and many of them are rhd only (they hit our steering shaft) Paul modified his steering linkage to use one, and Ray uses a custom manifold.

If you really want one, they can be found. Trust makes a good CA one that Paul_s13 uses (I think)...The equal length dealies most high hp people are using are pretty $$$ unless you can find one used...but log type manifolds are pretty cheap ($250ish)

I think Jon (Slw240sx) is gonna be making manifolds in afew months along with his intercooler piping and downpipes!

Yeah i dont think i've come across a CA18DET manifold anywhere. The stock manifold would work with a big 28 for at least 300whp i would think? I dont think i want to play Find the Manifold.

Closer to $350...think they'd let someone on a plane with one of those? :D

Oh, and dareo, I'm gonna shoot for 300hp and 8500rpm red line...not on stock internals, though...I mean, the initial buy in for a CA is low enough to where you can upgraded the internals and not break the bank like an SR would...

One of us needs to call and see if the stock T25 of the CA would be good for big28...I thought about getting an SR T25 and having them big28 it since it seems better suited for the procedure.

Btw, Sean, big28 is putting T28 internals in your T25...it costs $700 and the advantage is that you get to not mess with a manifold or rigged oil lines since it's the same turbo unit you're using now

there is a dude on the board that will help you get it (if you really want it) what kind of flange is that?

dareo, you may find it easier (cheaper) to get 300-350hp out of an SR20det s13 blacktop. The engine should be in better condition. (so no rebuild of any of that mess)

BTW you probably aren't going to hang with a vette Z06 from a standing start with any of these combos. I think 300 HP would be a lot easier if you started with a blacktop, too, and the path to get there is well worn.

blacktop is more money, i might as well go RB25. Besides, i think the Sr20 is overdone. The vette weighs over 3100 pounds, a 180sx is like 2500.

yeah but the vette has got more torque, no turbo lag, it will run the same numbers all day, and its a more thourougly engineered sportscar. we could sit and bench race them all day if you wanted do but... I'm just saying those things are ****ing quick. Besides the Rb25 is too hard to find parts for.Maybe that will change, thanks to SCC...hey, it worked for the sr20

maybe its just wishful thinking but i'm sure there is a chance that with enough traction and 350hp, that it would be possible to hang w/ a z06 from a standing start... vettes are overrated anyway :pface

with weight reduction, slicks and a good driver, I can see it being done...at least a couple times :D

I say don't worry so much about money. If money is an issue, then maybe a swap is not really for you...I know that I personally want to do 300hp with a smooth reving 1.8L because I like the idea of that better than with the SR which half the people I know have...I will probably spend a lot more than they do just to do it my own way, but that's my reason...

A T3/T04 based turbo of some sort, some 550cc or better injectors, an efficient FMIC and a decently tuned ecu will get you in the ballpark of 300+whp without destroying your motor. The engine my girlfriend's new engine has been through hell and back again and has yet to let us down in anyway such as: blown headgasket (stock), bearing knock, oil pump failure, rocker arm issues (I know the CA18DET doesn't have rocker arms) or any sort of mechanical failure. I have done 300+whp and done it comfortably without fearing that the engine is going to let go. As a matter of fact, we drove the thing everyday on pump gas between 18 and 15psi and the engine loved it. And talk about corvettes, well, I smoked everyone of the ones that crossed my path from a couple of Z06's to a few C5s. I agree in the fact that they are wickedly fast and are not to be under-estimated, but I didn't nearly blow my car up to pull away from them either. Here's a pic of the new car (my G/f's) with the stealth intercooler look, bigger turbo, HKS camshafts and Hybrid gearbox with helical LSD. And to those of you that know what a B12 sentra is, you will instantaneously know that that's a pretty big intercooler.

awesome Boost Boy thats the kind of post i was looking for. You are running a CA18DET in a 240sx right? Its pretty much the same if its in a sentra though. Vette's are too heavy compared to a light turbo nissan.
