My 3 week old Versa SL (manual) is causing some concern... This is my first Japanese car (been a VW man for 20 years and paid dearly for the Farvignuggen...). Are any of these issues common?

1) It seems that the idle when upshifting delays as if there's a choke that's sticking. This only happens when upshifting but it's odd as I'm sure I'm adding wear to the clutch (I've been driving manual for 20 years and have never had to replace one!)

2) When the car is warm and I shut down for a few minutes (i.e. pop into the store for milk) it takes a while to start - at least 4 tries. This can't be good for the starter.

3) When idling my passengers complain of a "gas smell". I rode along in the passenger seat and also smelled it.

I'm taking it into the dealer this week, is there anything anyone can tell me about these and other potential issues?

I'm glad I opted for the extended warranty, but damn, I just wanted 4 years of trouble free motoring....

Thanks.

Mike

Issue #2 is pretty common. It'll be easily fixed. I'm pretty sure that it is a service bulletin..?

Don't know why you're smelling gas!

I know that when starting an engine when its cold results in a richer fuel mixture as well as driving in frigid temperatures. This is a common result amongst Hyundai and Kia.

#2 Not sure whether they fixed it in 2009, if not it might be a fuel pump issue. Replaced under warranty.

Manual transmission cars in today's emissions enviroment are programed to delay idle return between upshifts. Did you not notice this during the pre-delivery test drive? The manual tran Hyndai elantra that I test drove several years ago did just as you descibed. Even though I have never owned a car without a clutch, I opted for the versa cvt because I felt that I would have trouble learning the clutch technique required for a smooth upshift.

fuel presure regulator needs to be changed, takes a couple of hours andcovered under the warrenty.Might have to do with your other problems. Just tell them what its doing.and tell them it was covered under the service bulletin like mubbly said.

I have an 09 S and just had the fuel pump and regulator replaced. I had about 2000 miles on it when it was changed out....
