It was originally silver, he repainted.

Could you maybe size down the sig pic a bit?

I just don't understand why you have posted the same paragraph 3 maybe 4 times now. Kind of confusing.

After 3 one should learn that the very worst used parts buy is a USED then sitting automatic transmission. Fresh factory remans are always the way to go unless you don't mind paying swap labor [$600] time and time again hoping to find a functioning one

No crap.

And if I was the one doing the install I wouldn't warranty it unless he at least had the cooler lines flushed and a filter installed, if not an external cooler.

Where do you think all the crap from the two previously dead transmissions ended up?

Exactly why dealer SOP demanded replacement of the radiator and its heat exchanger, later changed to a flush procedure in a TSB, on the pre 1994.

Not bad advice....

I have a little experience with this since I went through two transmission replacements in the past few months.

At 190K my orignal transmission failed. I visited a JDM importer and picked up a used transmission.... You might remember engline.com Tech? After install we found out the transmission was pure junk... I had to muscle-up to shift from P to D and it slammed as if someone had rear-ended me.

One mistake I made was not having them drop the pan.... my mechanic informed me that when he pulled it, he saw enough deposit on the magnet to form a small sculpture. I had to eat the labor on that and get a 2nd unit elsewhere. BTW I was smart enough to purchase it using AMEX then dispute the claim at the first sign of resistance to a refund (the seller bellied up fast and gave me my refund once they contacted him).

I have a good one now from another JDM importer, but this time I took my time checking out a few trannys... having them drop the pans to examine magnet filings, examining the condition of the dipstick etc. The transmission I got seemed hardly used if basing observations on aesthetics. The dipstick still had the tiny shiny sticker on the handle with Japanese writing... the transmission mount was also attached and in great condition, an unusual case and another clue on it's usage. The entire unit was clean but not in a washed sense....etc. Not much to go on, but a lot better than nothing.

The transmission shifts crisply and cleanly and the oil pan has a drain plug so I'm happy...but I lost $500 (labor) in the process.

The bottom line...you take a big chance. For me, the cost was still way below having a dealer reman installed (saved on shipping too)... At 3 units, I'd just give up and go the guaranteed route.

If mine goes out I'll probably get a japanese pullout, but get it directly from the importer and do as you suggest - if they're all the same price it pays to get the best one there.

Coming from the man who wrote the book, I'm honored that you'd take my advice. ....always a good thing to learn from someone else's mistakes.

If you ever need one and have trouble finding one nearby, I'd take a trip to the 2nd seller I dealt with and pick one out for you. They claim to have never sold a bad one (coughm, cough).... It's the least I could do for the man who will reprogram my future ECU..which I'll be shipping to you sometime next week.

Well, I know a lot about MANUAL transmissions. Automatics I'm no pro. And I don't have a shop so I couldn't do anything about it if I wanted to.
