I see where you're coming from, but I dunno, the wheelbases are within about 0.5", and the Versa has more interior volume. The Versa's ample dimensions thrust it into competition with "larger" cars. I definitely cross-shopped them, since Mazda doesn't have a smaller segment car here in the states.

Ha! Let me gather myself up after a nice chuckle at that one! Any chance your friend's 3 is a base model with the 2.0L?
Here's a hint: the manual-trans 2.3L model is clocked at 7.3 seconds 0-60 MPH...the Versa is in the 9.5 second range. Automatic-equipped 2.3L models are around 8 seconds.
Just some words of advice - if you see a 2.3L decal on the side (or a Mazdaspeed logo on the back) I wouldn't get involved in a red-light race.

It's ok. Not as comfortable as the V in my opinion. I like that it has 4 wheel disc brakes. At first I thought the techtronic automatic shifter was fun but I haven't used it for about a year..no point. She really likes it. But we always take my V for long road trips and what not as it has a more comfortable ride and more space in the back.
I have noticed her headlights are really dim and always have been since we got the car compared to mine.
When I was looking at getting rid of my Xterra I looked at a 3 hatchback. I really like the Phantom Blue color on them. I almost got it but to get what I wanted on it made it a little out of the price range I was going for. Plus it would be boring to pretty much have 2 of the same car. So I stuck with Nissan since my Xterra did me right for the 4 years I had it.
Yeah, it took me a while to get my seat to the comfiest setting, but the full-power seats help customize things much more than manual seats.
The GT has HIDs, which definitely take care of any dim-headlight issues.
I too rarely use the auto-stick, although I'd say I use it once a month or so. Mainly a gimmicky sales feature, but it does let you wring it out now and then, as it will let you take it all the way to redline without upshifting for you.
