before you start counting cash for mods and buying them, get the engine in the car.set aside up to $500 for misc junk (motor mounts?)

all your manitanence items, hoses, water and oil pumps would be great (A rebuild+balance would be better, then you can slap some forged pistons in too)

if it were me, and i was starting with an s13, an engineset from an importer +$3k

i would definatly do an 83.5mm forged piston, (~$600) balance rotating assembly, (basic rebuild kit, rings, bearings, bore+hone) (~<$800) metal head gasket ($300) (i would go tomei like i have now, i personally dont want to use a cometic)then springs ($250), cams ( <$500) cam gears ($250) and a t04E with .68 turbine (<600)then a standalone (megasquirt or SDS, either can be done and tuned for <$1000 + wideband ~$300 )700-1000 cc injectors ($200-300) adjustable nismo FPR (~$100) and a hoss fuel pump

that shopping list comes to just under $5k ... but you can do the internals (pistons, valve springs, rebuild+balance) then do stuff like cams, cam gears, standalone, hoss turbo+manifold, exhaust) later

this plan will put you on track to get a stupid fast car as you get more money

but thats just what i would do if i had to do everything all over from square 1, take it with a grain of salt and make your decisions based on research, common sense, and budget

Very vague.... First thing you need to realize is what you want to do with your car and the ca you putting in it. Goals and what you want then realistically following through and knowning you will be changing your plan will help you get started and hopefully wouldnt bother asking this kind of ... question. Search and see what you can do to it. With 3k you can rebuilt it. But it leads to you being vague about all this.

Whoa, nice motor in your sig...

I rebuilt my motor doing all stock components (well, mostly stock...) as this is just a fun daily with no plans to "go big". I spent right around $1200 doing the rebuild. Factor in all the bolt-on goodies such as a fmic kit, exhaust, fuel pump, gauges, intake, boost controller, BOV, etc and it adds up FAST! I would aim for reliability before looking for mods. Then see what you have left to play with.

mounts, sr flywheel, new clutch kit, 1 piece driveshaft, lsd, water pump, timing belt, aluminum radiator, hoses, belts, spark plugs, gaskets, exhuast.

there is so much stuff.

do you have anything already?

i wouldnt get inside the motor yet, i would just install it, and start doing bolt ons and maintainence.

Well I think your path can take you in two different directions. The first is to get the motor in as it sits and start w/the bolt ons. The second is to build the motor to take whatever abuse you can throw at it late on down the road and know that you're all set. There is a pretty simple way to decide IMHO. Have a leakdown test performed. This is not a compression test. You can have good to decent compression and still have weak rings. Trust me, I know. If the leakdown test comes up OK or worse, I'd plan on a rebuild. If it comes up great or decent, then I'd drop it in and start bolting parts on.

I forgot whose ca18det this was but the guy was trying to sell it after it didnt run right when he finished the rebuild. It looked very nice on an engine stand.

What would be your engine of choice for $4,500 dollars?

Good luck finding one! The 2JZ would make a pretty nice drag motor for the S13. But IMHO, for drag cars, good ol' American Muscle is hard to beat...
