Been trying to research this topic regarding differential swaps. I only found that a small number of M45 owners have done this differential swap with a 3.69 VSLD from an early model G37S donor. I wanted to know if anyone attempted this swap with their M56? I understand this swap is better for the RWD M56 as the X has 2 differentials, but I am just curious if it is doable and safe for the engine?

Those two posts are about 3.357 differentials and not 3.69. I wonder if it has the same effect though.

That's cause you bought the wrong one. You bought the diff from a manual sports that won't fit. You need the diff from a auto sports.

Clearly you didn't read through the first post.

Either I'm blind or stupid because I do not see a 3.69 VLSD mentioned anywhere on those two threads. On the contrary, you can make it fit as it has been done with the FX series and G series with automatic transmissions, only the flanges have to be swapped from the AT diff to the 6MT 3.69 diff and pinion grinded. I just want to know for a VK56VD if a 3.69 VLSD is optimal or if it's better to stick with the 3.357 that is found in the open and VLSD form. I wouldn't even start with the G37 vert 4.08 differential because it would make the first and second gears useless.

Good luck since you know everything.

Hi Marseille, I would recommend PM'ing "ken in az". He is in the first thread that is linked above. He has some youtube videos on the install and is VERY knowledgeable about upgrades to the M56...a good guy to know:). There were some nuances with the install. I believe he had to change the axles and some of the fittings so it wasn't quite plug and play but not too bad for someone with a good set of tools. His other videos are equally interesting. With all of his mods, he got his rig to pull low 11's if I remember correctly. Good luck!
