Well boys, I think we did it. I put nearly 200 miles on the second rebuild today, with no hesitation or check engine light. The motor runs like new. What a fun and pleasant ride. Thank you all for tuning in and providing your support. Be patient, be thoughtful, and drive safe.

Main bearing cap bolts: Nissan 12293-38U1A
Main bearings: NISSAN 12207-31U07 (and 31U05, 31U02, 31U01)
Rod bearings: MAHLE / CLEVITE CB1857P6 (CB-1857P(6))
Oil pump: ENGINETECH EP041
Exhaust mani gasket: ENGINETECH ENI35A (ENI3.5-A)

Nissan has a variety of bearings that are thicker or thinner by 0.0001-0.0002", up to about 0.001" thicker than normal. I mixed and matched these sizes to get a fairly uniform clearance across the crankshaft. Their rod bearings were too expensive, so I went with an aftermarket set and it was fine. The rods were all rebuilt to standard. I had to replace the main bearing bolts because all the torquing to check clearances stretched the originals up to the spec. I also had to replace the rings and two rods, because I did some damage to the rod cap threads as well as one of the oil control rings.

223k on the engine and it runs better than ever.

P0021 was due to a faulty solenoid. New aftermarket part was junk. Had to get new OEM.

Getting lots of power out of it. It seems happier with 40 weight oil. I use 5w-40 in the winter.

I have a tiny coolant weep out of the rear thermostat. I just top off the coolant every few months. No leaks otherwise, nothing on the driveway.

Between oil changes (5500-6000 miles) I’d say the engine burns maybe a pint of oil. I’m extremely happy with that.

Pushing it to 5k rpm on the highway is a delight. At idle and on the highway it sounds like a beast in its prime.
