do our 3.5se altimas run a bit lean? just curios cuz it recomends 96 octane or 91 for us cali ppl. does that mean it runs a bit lean on regular gas? or does it pull timing or how does it all work? hows the stock air:fuel ratio?

regardless of your personal thoughts, it doesnt help, it only hurts! You dont need to "trick" people into answering questions.

No, we run a higher octane because we have a higher compression ratio. Which means we have a large amount of air being brought into the pistons. So we need a higher octane fuel to burn with the large amount of air to capture the most power and emissions capability. The 4 bangers run a lower amount of air so the fuel doesn't need to be as pure to make it combust cleanly.

Our cars are actually tuned to run a tiny bit rich from the factory, to avoid any kind of knocking situation.

ya thats what i thought, most cars come running a bit rich from the factory but i was just bored and randomly thought about it lol

here in cali we use 91 (as you already know) but theres a local gas station that sells 100 octane at the pump.... how would that affect us if we were to fill up with it before going to the track? will it affect us at all?

and sorry about the tittle, it really was just a random thought/question lol i'll make more descriptive titles in the future

I'm not sure how it would affect you n/a. I did it with the turbo and felt a difference. I'm pretty sure it would help you though.

ya that's what i was thinking especially since it actually recommends 96 for our cars instead of 91.... my friend was saying now but i think its cuz he was lazy and didnt want to show me where that gas station was lol

It doesn't recommend 96, It recommends 91

The RON is the research octane number. Its an octane number Nissan says is the best fuel to run with the car, however, in high compression engines this number is impractical. So the AKI octane rating is the recommended number to everyday people.

i just went and double checked my manual and on page 9-2 it says it recommends 91 AKI and then it says 96 (Research octane number). so i was like oh, it wants me to research it, i guess thats the one it wants me to use they worded it complicated lol thanks for the info blake

Since the topic is about octane in our engines, i had a question to throw out there. When gas got really expensive this past summer I started to put the cheap 87 octane in. The dealer told me it'd be ok but that i'd notice a performance decrease. So now that gas is cheaper i've been putting in 91 octane gas. however it doesn't quite feel as fast as it was before. is there any way i can actually check this instead of how my car feels to me now versus then?

I believe in this scenario you have to wait for the engine to notice the 91 octane gas or you could try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting it and see if that makes a difference.

Research octane number is the recommended octane number for the worst driving conditions on the engine - high stress, etc...that's why that number is so high. There is also the Motor Octane Number, or MON, which is a lower number indicating the octane rating the engine needs to just "run." Your AKI is a happy medium in the middle of those two numbers where you would do the most of your normal driving.

All of My Nissans run a bit rich which makes cleaning the exhaust a pain in the ***. So anyway 96 Octane? Nah it recommends 91 or above, in PA you can get 94 from Sunoco. I use 93 becasue i am a die hard Sheetz Fan.

O don't know where you can buy 96 anyway, I think what you referring to is 96 reasearch octane or 91 AKI (really what we call 91 octane) which are one in the same

I played for Sheetz in Pony League that we'd have an all hands in and 1, 2, 3 MTO!

My home town has one of the original Sheetz stores and and is getting a new one, we even got a 3rd traffic light!!!

Wen't from a couple little convieience stores in Altoona to a 4.5 Billion dollar private company, I don;t care what anyone says, I lived in the Wawa region, Sheetz has better eveything.

It reccomends 96? Isn't that like racing fuel. The highest octane I have ever seen at a normal gas station is 92.

nope. just the first post so see what the threads topic is. I didn't realize that you had to read everyones posts on a thread before inputting your own two cents.

In case someone just reads 1st and last posts 96 Research Octane equals 91 AKI or as we see and call it every day 91 octane

96 Octane = 91 AKI = 91 Octane Rating (what you see at the pump and everyone calls 91 Octane)
