Just wondering, if the Versa didn't exist, what car would you have bought and why?

Well if the V didn't exist, wouldn't that alter the course of time? If the V didn't exist, I would've probably won the lottery by now. Then I would run down to my local Nissan dealership and buy the first 350z Track. Then ship it off to have it suped up.

Aftre evaluating 6 models, my 2nd place choice was the Honda Fit - Sport trim level (RED). From my perspective, it was the closest to the Versa in terms of overall passenger+cargo capacity and quality. The reason why the Fit was in 2nd place is that the interior capacities & flexibilities emphasized "cargo", whereas the Versa's emphasis was on "passengers". The Versa offered the best balance of these that I was looking for.

Other models that I looked at really sacrificed either passenger (rear especially) and/or cargo capacity.

I agree with Link on all points, except the color. I'd have gotten a Fit in the light Gray, whatever silly name they call it.

Kia Spectra5, Spark Blue or Black, with sunroof and ABS.

I can't stand Hondas in any trim. I would have gladly sacrificed the few MPG for a company that still actually cares about how they build cars. I've owned an older Specra sedan ('02) and it was a good, solid car, even if the design was a bit dated at the time.

Or, if I had money, a Ford Escape Hybrid... which would have been more my wife's doing than mine.

Honda Civic, although I saw my first Matrix close up yesterday. It just didn't have the passenger room we wanted which was a high priority. I didn't get to sit in it however.

I'm thinking the Vibe would have been closer to what I wanted to spend, but hubby really wanted the Civic to begin with anyway. The Vibe is really an economy Matrix, since the Vibe has a Toyota engine, but the cheap GMC paint job.

But we would have spent the extra bucks and got the Civic.

If gas mileage had not been a consideration, I would have got another SUV.

Seriously, I had a look at almost all of the hatches out there. My second choice would probably be the Matrix. I enjoyed the Matrix, but I didn't like how pricey it was at the base. When you start adding up the options, you start looking at way more than you're wanting to pay. We did like the amount of aftermarket parts available, but we couldn't get the options we wanted for the price.

We enjoyed the Spectra 5. It was priced the same way at the Matrix, but all of the options were included. One of the biggest drawback to Kia was their history. Back in the late 90's, the Korean cars were the most undependable cars out. And there was virtually no aftermarket presence for the Kia's. I fell for the Kia guys, because no one's looking their way. Plus after we finished our test drive, we noticed a burning smell from under the hood.

We didn't even bother with the Fit or Scions, we didn't like to way they looked.

2003 Toyota Matrix XRS. [2003 was the best year for the Matrix, with the XRS being 180hp as opposed to 173hp in '04, 170hp in '05, and now 164hp in the XR trim]

Oh, and by the way, since some of you brought up so-called "dream cars," I would have gotten a Subaru Impreza WRX STi Limited.
