I just bought a G35X with a 5at. I noticed the transmission not wanting to go into reverse like it should....slight hesitation, but it would get there. Now, it will get there but not fully engage. When warmed up, the engine has to be revved to get it to move in reverse only. When the engine is cool/cold, it goes into reverse with only a slight hesitation and feels like it fully engages in to gear. All forward gears work perfectly. There are no lights. Does anyone have any ideas on what is going on? Am I looking at a used transmission replacement? A rebuild of this one? Something else happening?

UPDATE: I took the car to a transmission shop and the guy there said 9 out 10 sure that it is the Reaction ring that is not getting enough pressure. Anyone got any other ideas of fixes?

Separate issue too. Background info first.....The moron I bought the car from put (meaning, he forced) a coupe compression rod onto the PASSENGER side front. Of course there was no clearance for that against the CV axle and it shredded the boot, threw grease everywhere, blah, blah , blah. Anyway, I found it and replaced with a compression rod that actually fits, then had it aligned. All was good and it drove great!! Now when I am turning left and only turning to the left. It sounds like the DRIVER side front wheel has a knocking sound and you can feel it knock thru the steering wheel. As soon as you move the steering wheel back to center, the knock goes away. It does this even when doing a slight curve to the left. Of course the harder the steering wheel is turned, the more you hear/feel it. Anyone have any ideas as to what this could be? I was replacing all the brakes and did a visual but couldn't see anything loose. I did see a black mark ((at the height of the tire) on the aluminum piece that bolts at the top and comes down that everything else seems to bolt onto. No idea what it is called. When I grab the tore and move it, like I said earlier, nothing moves. Anyone have any suggestions?

Sorry about your troubles. Not sure if you can do anything about the trans, except have a shop work on it. Remember that you get what you pay for...

The suspension issue...hard to tell without seeing/feeling the problem. Have a shop diagnose...

Thanks Joe. Dropped it off at the transmission shop today. After comparing prices of a used one vs. a rebuild, it made sense to do the rebuild and know what I have (not to mention a warranty). As for the thumping sound, I found it too. I had previously rebuilt the passenger side CV and I guess I didn't get it seated correctly past the holding clip. I hope this story ends well.

yeah, I was about to suggest the clip. Glad you found it.

Good luck with the transmission. The 5AT is pretty solid and I'm surprised you've had issue. It's bound to happen to someone of course.
