The original tank on my 1980 280zx was corroded and full of debris, so I took it to a radiator/repair shop down the road to see if they could clean it out and reseal it.

The guy called me today and said that the tank is in pretty bad shape, but that he's got another 280 on the lot that was in a front-end collision (I saw it when I dropped mine off, everything but the front was in pretty good shape). He's talked to the owner who wanted to sell the whole thing for parts, but will part with the tank, which he claims is in very good condition, for $300.

Is that a reasonable price for a used tank if it is in good condition? I'm finding prices online from $250 to $500 for refurbished tanks so it sounds ok to me but I thought I would ask the pros and make sure.

how much does he want for the whole car if you can talk the whole car out of him for 300 sounds like a good deal never know what you can find on a parts car you need for yourself

Oh apparently the owner wouldn't part with the whole car, just the tank, and on the condition that he put mine back in her wrecked Z. She wouldn't even let me buy her cruise control switch.

I cleaned adn sealed my own tank usign a kit form eastwood, was your tank leaking? if it's not rusted through I'd stock to cleanigna dn sealing your tank, $300 seems steep for a used tank, I've bought whole cars fro as much and then had to cut the tanks in half to get the recycling center to accept them

Well the deal is done now. I needed the car back in running condition so I can try to do some work on my scooter. When I picked it up I looked in the old tank, it was pretty severely corroded and the bottom was just full of crap.

Side note - is it ironic or just sad that I seem to have more frequent problems with a 3-year-old Italian scooter than a 30-year-old Japanese car?

Not really. Sounds about normal. FIAT = fix it again Tony. Applies to most Italian cars.

Well to be fair the Vespa is the daily driver and the Z is mainly for weekend cruising.
