Have any of you upgraded your stock turbo in a 1981 280zx turbo? If so what turbo did you install and what else did you have to upgrade for the engine to accept it. And has anyone installed an intercooler? and what did you have to do to install that? thanks

I used to roll an L20ET in an 85' Skyline.

The flange is a T3, so most of the available T3/T4 hybrids should bolt up. Be aware, though, a large compressor housing may require you to install longer studs and slip a spacer on the manifold to clear it.

My L did not have a water cooled center section, yours might but I am betting it doesn't. If it does, that's good, grab a turbo with a water-cooled center.

Be ready to have a new front pipe made. The L outlet is a sharp L and flows like Gilbert Godfrey on mic. Have a nice S-curve made with the common 4-bolt T3 outlet flange so you may be able to change later.

You need an intercooler. Get one with the inlet and outlet on the same side, vertical core would be preferred.

You need to ditch the factory electronics and injectors if you are looking for real power. That computer is decades old.
