Due to road work i went down a street acouple of days ago that I usually wouldn't and saw a beautiful gold 280ZX, acouple dings in the front fender and driver mirror busted but other than the engine looked like it had sat a while, the car was tip top... but no plates and a Chilton in the front seat, I'm going to see if I can make this guy an offer, and I'll at least post some pics when I get by there. It was sweet. I don't know or am unable to guess what year, the S30s look very similar to me, I'm unaware of the differences in years.

What years should I look up for differences? I'm still interested in what I saw, the front end had the sat back headlights... let's just see if this guy lets it go. But what are the differences?

the S30 is 70-78 (240Z, 260Z, 280Z), no power anything, rear drum brakes, U joint rear axles

the S130 is a 79-83 (280ZX), most had power steering, power windows, 4 wheel disk brakes, cv rear shafts, trailing arm rear suspension, the rear quarter windows are much larger

the headlight buckets look similar, but side by side are completely different

Unless it is a turbo 280ZX I'd pass. The 81-83 were very gutless and handled like crap. The non-turbo was only 140hp and while you can make the handle okay with new springs, shocks/struts, sway bars, bushings, etc overall not the greatest.

If the car is a turbo than that is different, with 180 HP and easy ways to crank that up higher it is more interesting. If not stay witht the Z31 which had a much better suspension design (especially the rear) and much more power out of the stock NA motors.

it's very easy to build the n/a for n/a power, or to swap int he turbo

and the rear suspension on the S130 is very similar to the garbage found on the back of the Z31, seroiusly of ll the Z's they had the worst rear suspension, semitrailing arms were never a good idea

1979-80 were the weaker engines. Same horsepower as the 280Z and almost the same weight. 1981-83 had higher compression and more power although most had full power options and weighed a bit more. They're hardly slower in the quarter mile than a 280Z; nothing worth saying that its gutless unless you're admitting that a 280Z is as well.

My 280zx turbo is not very fast but that's only in comparison to the power and response of a 350Z.

Totally disagree with you on the Z31, with the right springs, shocks and sway bars the design is works quite well. The 280ZX was a bloated pig that handled like crap and couldn't get out of its own way. I drove brand new ones, the Turbo was okay but the NA was a turd compared to the Z31, back in the day (and I was there back in the day) it was a massive upgrade. I was just about to buy a brand new 84' Supra in 1984 when the Z31 came out....the Z31 blew the 280ZX away in every way including losing pounds, length and a better rear supension design. My step-brother was a racer back in those days and the 300 had way more to work with.

but is all opions isn't it.
