The 280zx is a one-owner (my wife) 56K mi. beauty that, except for a AFM adjustment to pass smog last year, ran absolutely flawlessly until about 3 weeks ago. The car is run once weekly (about 40 miles) for two months and then hibernates for two months on a trickle charger. Except for its outings it is always garaged. The problem occurs 5-6 minutes after the car is started (about 3 mi.) and at 45mph (about 2700rpm) The engine cuts out instantly and the tach drops to 0. The first time the cutout was just for a few seconds and the car ran perfectly the rest of the day. The second time we coasted into a nearby parking lot turned off the ignition and restarted the car and it again ran without further incident. The third time, on the way to the repair shop, it died again but after the car coasted about 50 yards the engine restarted (the trans. is a 5-speed stick) and it ran flawlessly thereafter. The mechanic ran it later that day and the following day from a cold start and was unable to repeat the problem. I suspect the problem is electronic (computer, ICM, ECU etc) but am at a loss and need some help.

you didn't specify turbo or N/A? the turbo distributors are known to fail kinda intermitantly, or the module on the side of the n/a distributor which is real easy to replace, and I've seen similar issues with failing fuel pumps, next time it facts try determining if it's a fuel or spark issue
