My friend n I recently got a 280z 1st n 2nd gear are broken. We want to know what other tranny can we use beside another tranny from the same car. Oh we are also planning on increasing its power we know that using a MN47 head would increase power a lil bit n the burning is a lil faster is there any other upgrades from other cars that we can use?

you can use the T-5 tranny from the 82-83 turbo 280ZX.. its a lot beefier than the n/a tranny.. but you will have to make a custom drive shaft to use that tranny. also theres a guy on hybrid Z that modified a Z32 tranny to fit the L series engines...

if you have a 280Z it either came with an N42 or an N47, they shard combustion chambers but the N47 has more restrictive sleaved exhaust runners, the N42 which was on the 75-76 280Z is the more desirable of the 2, the n47 camn on the 77-78 models, as for the trans, any 70-83 240Z, 260Z 280Z or 280ZX tranny will bolt to your engine, if you felt really fricky the 240SX 5 sopeed will fit if you swap the front case with one form a Z and change the main bearing and over bore the cuntershaft holes, and as ice pointed out the 82-83turbo T-5 used a different output yoke, you'e bneed a custom shaft and mount

the 240sx swap is involved and requires swapping the front case, mainshaft bearings boring the countershaft hole and a custome shaft and mount! and even then it sits kinda tilted to the passanger side

yeah it was a pain, it's nice that the 240 sx trannies are so available but they aren't as strong as the T5 found in the 82-83 turbo cars, the output chaft is noticable stronger, the input shaft doesn't make as much neckdown, when comparing them side to side the T5 is noticible heavier and just seems to be mroe solid,a dn enough of both have been blown up to confirm the T5 will take a good 50whp mre abuse than the 240 sx unit
