Well i stopped to look at an 82 280z turbo on the side of the road today. It's not an original New York car, which is good, but you can tell it has been driven in the salt a few times.

The bad:
1. The car seems to have been poorly painted about 15 years ago. It was factory red and whomever sprayed it, never sprayed the door jambs, the engine bay, or under the license plate. At this point whats showing of the factory paint looks nicer than the resprayed parts, which look like a dull pink now. (At least to my colorblind a**) so it's in need of a respray.
2. The wheels were painted to match the car and it's all fading and coming off where the rims are oxidizing.
3. The hatch rattles a lot.
4. No factory aero on the car anywhere. (Means I have to buy it.)
5. The front drivers side of the car has a large, rusted hole at the front of the frame. It seems to be where the bumper mounts. It was on soaking wet grass, which prevented me from getting under it to really look. I don't think this rusted through, it seems like it was damaged and then it rusted.
6. The interior is incomplete. There is no carpet.
7. Has a cheap sub box in the back.
8. It's suffering form purple tint syndrome.
9. Based on the way the car was sitting, the suspension may be uneven. It was hard to tell as the car was on wet grass, but the rear wheels seemed to be stuffed into the rear wheel wells a little too tight.
10. Someone put the wrong battery in it, which was too tall, and their solution was to turn the battery on it's side. It has all leaked out and damaged the engine bay.

The good:
1. The car has a "rebuilt engine" it has definitely been rebuilt at one point, as the block is painted and the head is clearly less oxidized than it would be at it's age. I question how long ago it was.
2. It is a turbo.
3. The majority of the car is rust free. The floors are solid. (Which was easy to find out since there was no carpet lol)
4. The interior is mostly complete and in good shape.
5. It has T-Tops.

The owner is asking $2100 for it, which I feel is way too much. I'm thinking it's more of a $1000 car, but I'm not sure if he's going to go for it.

Doesn't look like a bad buy, I would get a better look at the rust on the frame you mentioned. It looks to be a decent car though, I wouldn't pay more than $1,200 for it, but i'd say $1,000 sounds about right.

Well I still have the RB from my S13 project that I parted out, and I've been looking for a home for it. I've been thinking I want to resto mod a 240 /260 /280z. I have a Z32 parts car I can rob a lot of stuff from, and I'd basically be stripping this down to it's shell and rebuilding it. I want to go as far as replacing all the wiring with fresh copper, and replacing all the gauges etc with modern electronics. I have my full set of autometer pro comp gauges too. :) I figure it would take me a year to get it all done.

Sounds like you have everything you need then, i'd go for it if they'll get right on the price of it. I like the S130 personally, I like S30's better but i'm a big fan of both of them.

it's a zx, not a z. there is more rust, trust me. new weather seals and interior shiz is available. if you're going to strip it down and do it all again from the ground up, go for it, your $1k assessment is about right, it'll be nice if the guy goes for it.

I prefer the S30 as well, but this one is at a convenient place. Ideally if I were to get and I'm going to go see how it runs and take a better look at the frame once I clear the $1000 with nxer. I don't think she will say no, but I don't like to assume.

I know it's a ZX, I just usually omit it when speaking of my 300ZX, so I did the same with this. The X just means a turbo option or something anyways, right? I honestly am ignorant on this point.

I was thinking I'd like an 81, as it was the year I was born but some reading makes me think the 82 is a better idea as it seems to incorporate some 'fixes' that the chassis needed.

no the zx was a different chassis than the z, I dont know the whole list of changes but they are not the same car. I personally dont like the look of the 280zx nearly as much as an s30.

Well *according to wikipedia* there was a minor difference between the S130 and the S30 in terms of drag and a HUGE difference in the aerodynamic lift, with the S130 coming out with a lot less. along with suspension, rack and peanut steering, etc etc

The "X" signified luxury, staking Nissan's claim in the "Grand tourer" class. The Z was sport, the X was luxury. It was all the craze back then. And the 280Z was body on frame, the 280ZX and forward was unibody. (Just FYI, in case you were planning a "frame-off restoration")

really check the nose of the car.... where the hood bolts, the front fender wells, frame rails... they rust really bad

i just parted one out; still toying with putting the l28et in my s13....

for an RB u will need to find a front stump pan as these are all rear. if the engine runs great i wouldnt bother with a swap, they are fun the way they are and the Ls are cheap to build

1k sounds ok 700 would be better....

and to the above; the s30 was most definately not a body on the frame; they were all unibody cars... trust me i had one and it desinigrated as one piece of tin

Was it really? I always thought the S30 had a solid frame. Shows how much I paid attention when I was up underneath Bella....
