i found a guy who might sell me his 78 280z but is unsure of a price and frankly so am i. it has been sitting for 7 years but the body and most of the interior is in great shape. The guy said it was running when parked. minimal rust, i think its only surface rust. what would be a typical price for a car in similar shape? any positive feedback/knowledgeable info would be appreciated!

for any searchig you might so be sure to seacrh for a 280ZX, as the 75-78 280Z is a much different car from the 79-83 280ZX and has a completely different market, it's rare to see any S130 (79-83 280ZX) reach more than 5k short of a true unmolested low milage survivor or aniversary model, $2-3k tends to be where the majority of these cars in driver condition sell, basket cases can be had for a couple hundred dollars on up, your area might vary a bit and the condition and local market are the ultimate factors in determining price

not running with surface rust, could be anywhere form free up to maybe 1k just depending on what's good on the car, a decent driver will run you in the 2-3k range while a clean restored car can bring 6-10k

Thanks youve been a big help, off topic but how hard would it be to put a 350 in the 78z?

no very, it's been done for years, the origional conversion offerend in the late 70's placed the engine kinda far forwanr and high requiring a hood scoop, the current popular postion, often called the JTR verison (Jags That Run), places the engine furtehr back and lower making it possible to run a stock hood and offering a better weight bias, and the new LS style injected intakes offer and much roomier fit

basically you need some simple plates to ofset the engine mounts ont he motor allowing the engine to bolt in with some simple plates, JTR made a book about it and there is a site devoted too all the various radical engine swaps int he S30 (hybridz.org)
