Hi, new to this site. Has anyone used a full dash cap? Need a little help. Do they need to go over a worn out dash or can they be installed directly to the metal dash assembly.

I've not done one myself, but I understand they fit over the existing vinyl. Just watch out that you can still remove the tach and speedometer through the front when you are done.

It goes on over the existing padded dash. If you have severe splitting and curling you might need to trim it back to get it to fit.

Thanks, trying to find some options . When I got the car there was no dash at all. (Big mistake) I picked up a dash frame now I need to come up with the rest.

Welcome aboard!

I'd recommend finding a complete dash, even if it's in bad condition. If it's already stripped to the metal, you;re going to have a rough time making a dash cap work with it.

Most folks are glad to get rid of an old shagged 280Z dash, so you shouldn't have too much trouble there. Once you have it, as evildky said, you'll want to grind down any areas where it's curled up, or "taller" than the original contours.

After that, the cap is an easy install: Set the dash on some jackstands or sawhorses, clean it well, apply adhesive, apply the dash cap, and wrap the whole thing in a BUNCH of bungie cords. Set it out in a warm location for a day or two, and you're ready to install it in the car. I've done a couple this way, and they look great.
