275/40/20 at all 4 Corners on an EX?

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

This tire size is 3.22% larger in overall diameter and eats up a bit of wheel well gap (1.165 cm) while increasing the ride height by the same amount. I am running 285/35/20's on back right now with no issues and I've tried the GTR fronts with 255/40/20's for a test fit on the front of the EX and it seemed fine. Any thoughts on how 275/40/20's will look or fit at all 4 corners on an EX?

Normally you want to stay within 3% difference +/- overall diameter. You are right on the border so shouldn't be any issues except the speedometer reading.

If you are RWD you can leave different sized wheels on the back (or front) with no issue. If you are AWD, you should be running all 4 wheels the same size or you could damage your transmission. In no case should you have different sized wheels on the right/left sides, this could also damage the differential(s).

Thanks for the info. I'm RWD and will have the exact same size wheel/tire at each of the 4 corners but they'll be 3.22% bigger in diameter than the stock size.

I bit the bullet and will give this size tire a shot. Props to Tread Depot for the screaming deal on a set of these Toyo Proxes 4 Plus tires in 275/40/20. The whole set was only $632 before shipping!

Boom!

Got the other 2 GT-R wheels along with 275/40/20 Toyo Proxes 4 Plus tires all around today. Results in about 1.1 cm increase in ride height (not good) but with 1.1cm less wheel well gap (very good). Plus the tires are 10 lbs. lighter EACH than the GT-R's Dunlop runflats that were on there. You can really feel this huge drop in unsprung weight.

The steering sensation is also a bit different. I went from running the OEM 18's and tires to these Toyos without ever having the wider wheels/ runflats on the front. So the unsprung weight on the front 2 stayed almost identical but the side wall height dropped and the contact patch got much bigger. It should have dialed out a lot of understeer from where it was.

The switch to the 275's from the 285 Dunlops in the rear really cleaned up all of the excess poke also. These are pretty darn close to perfect flushness now. The super soft compound GT-R OEM summer tires also threw a lot of gravel up into the wheel wells. We'll see if that is reduced any with this different, high performance all season compound.

Looks really good. The two-tone wheels are almost invisible unless someone is orbiting the car. :woot:
I've seen a few european tuner cars that sported ENTIRELY different wheels on each side. :mike

Thanks, Kat! I'm really hoping that it doesn't become something that bothers me. For now, I'm just excited to not have the completely wrong front/ back arrangement that has been on there for weeks. :chuckle:

I have FX20's on my EX now...running 255/45-20 in rear and 245/45-20 in front. I get very slight rubbing over speed bumps and small declines in pavement.

It's been bugging me...so i just bought some Yokohamas in 255/40-20 for all corners. Hope that .25" will make the difference.

Yours looks great.

I'm having the hardest time finding a 20" wheel that is butch and concave and 5 spoke all at the same time.

I might have to swipe your idea!

Do it-go GT-R. You'll dig it. I did have my first rubbing issue today. I had 3 passengers and myself out to lunch and we crossed a street with a big up down elevation change where the edge of the streets meet and it made a slight rubbing sound up front when it compressed for just a second. It wasn't loud or harsh so I don't think it is much of an issue on this set up.

The increased ride height is bugging me so I want to find stiffer springs that won't compress beyond the low point of my current set up and also won't drop the car more than 1-2 cms. Not sure that exists but I need to find them.

Thanks, I found my SLR camera today and took a bunch of snaps. Blurry cell phone pics have been swapped with some from today's session in the post above.

are you still rubbing with 255/40/20?
