Hey guys i am new to the forum and have been thinking about getting myself a 260z for some time now. Well the car i would like to buy has 95,000km (~59,000 miles i think) on the clock. It is a 1978 260z 2+2. Here a link to the pics http://www.gebrauchtwagen.at/bildwechsl ... s=31406195 I am sorry if this goes against the forumguidelines but i did read them and didnt find anything according to that. plz correct me if i am wrong. And i also searched the forum for some buying tips but didnt find anything. So please give me some information, for what to look out for. I do intend to work on car, but having no experience on cars so i dont know what to except. I did go a Highschool based on Mechtroniks so i do know how to weld , lathe, mill, basic electrics and programming ( if its to some use ^^) etc. thanks alot for your help ^^

The biggest concern for the early Z cars is rust. Most critical is rust on the front frame rails connecting the body to the front suspension. Corrosion from battery acid is also a frequent problem. It is much better to take the time to find a rust free car than trying to repair damage that has already occurred. Look at the floor boards, inside the fenders and under the doors.

I'm sure others will have other places to look.

^ DJ nailed it. If it's fairly complete, and there's minimal rust, then the answer is always BUY.

It won't depreciate, it's got a ton of character, and a classic Datsun is WAY cooler than anything you can buy new. Get it - we'll help you restore it!

thanks for the answers will be calling the seller and take a look at the car. Gonna take my camera with me to take some pics to post here (HD ^^) Ive read some posts where these kind of cars go for $2-3k. the Guy wants €5.9k ( with some bartering space) = $7605, it does sound a bit much but ive looked and there doesent seem to be alot near me. The Only others are restorated and going for €17k and €30k which is way over my budget. Right now i got 8,5k to spend, i though maybe use the extra money for some repairs and suspension.

I thought there was a mistake when I read 78 260 then I noticed you were in Australia. As has already been stated with these cars the chassis is the most important thing, the mechanicals are simple and cheap btu rust repair is what kills them. A 2+2 chassis here si far less desirable and would generally sell for half what a 2 seater would sell for, perhaps they are more popular down under, and perhaps you want a 2+2, otherwise hold out for a 2 seater.

Austria not Australia hehe Central Europe hehe. Hm yeah also kinda found out that 2 seaters are more worth but a 2+2 is what i need, usuall more than just two people ride along. well made out a time for looking at the car, but dazlights a b**** right now. Onlz have time to look at it at like 6oclock and by then its kinda dark, really need the camera so i can evaluate the pictures better, will post them after looking at the car. thanks alot for the help, and ill keep you guys updated.

From the pictures you posted in the first post, that car looks to be in decent condition, and likely well-worth the asking price.

doah! guess I should pay closer attention. Car looks goor in pictures but lots of hiding places for rust on these cars, buy the best chassis you can afford.
