255/40r20 tire best on a 9' or 9.5" wide rim?

i'm running a square set up with 20x9's with a 38 offset, stock suspension. 255/40 tires and i'm flush with the fenders. I'm looking at some 20x9.5 42 offset (i'll sit exactly the same on the onside of rim)...Question is, does a 255/40 work better on a 9.5' wide rim (same as Nissan GTR front wheels and tires) or 255/40's on a 9" rim which is what im running now.

WENT WITH A 20X9.5 AND STILL HAVE THE 255/40 TIRES. THE WIDER WHEEL HELPED ALOT. THE 20X9 HAD A +38 OFFSET WHICH PUT ME FLUSH WITH THE FENDER BUT JACKED UP THE SCRUB RADIUS. GOING WITH A 20X9.5 +42 OFFSET i MAINTAINED FACTORY SCRUB RADIUS (CRUCIAL!!!!!!!!!) AND HAVE THE FLUSH LOOK. a LOT OF SITES WILL SAW THAT 9" WIDE WHEEL IS BIGGEST BUT THEY ARE FALSE!!!!
I WILL BE GOING WITH A 265/40 TIRE NEXT TO GIVE ME SOME OUTER WHEEL PROTCTION..THE 255'S FIT GREAT AND HAVE STILL SIDEWALL NOW BUT NO OUTER PROTECTION. GREAT THING ABOUT THE 20X9.5 WHEEL YOUY CAN RUN A MULTITUDE OF TIRE SIZES...255/40,265/40,275/35 (STOCK DIAMETER 27.6")275/40....ON A 20x9 YOU ARE LIMITED TO 245's (too narrow) or 255's (small selection;)
