I've been disappointed with the auto industry's recent trend of uninspiring names for their cars. Most have become initials and or numbers....yawn. But the industry has had some pretty cool ones over the years. Road &Track just published their list of the best names:

Alfa Romeo Disco Volante: It's italian for "flying saucer", but I'm not so sure I agree with this one, as I hated disco during it's thankfully brief heyday, but it is a unique name.

AMC Javelin: didn't last that long but I get the point.... ;)

Buick Roadmaster: those cars took up half of the road, but it's a cool name.

Chevrolet Corvette: It's been around since the 50's, but still a good name.

De Tomaso Mangusta: Italian for mongoose or "cobra eater"? Oh yeah, better name than Pantera IMHO

Dodge Magnum: whether you think of Clint Eastwood's pistol or a large sized condom, it's pretty cool.

Dodge Rampage: the vehicle itself seemed wimpy compared to say El Camino or Rancheroo, but at least the name was better.

Dodge Viper: According to R&T whether it's a car or snake, you have to be careful or it'll jump out and kill you.

Eagle Talon: as in sister of the Eclipse. Talon grabs me more than Ecliplse. Just be-claws.

Ferrari Testarossa: Italian for red head. iconic car, especially the first one, name is almost as cool.

Hudson Hornet: Back then there was plenty of buzz about this one..

Jensen Interceptor: name kinda works for british car with a big Chrysler hemi stuffed under the hood.

Lamborghini Countach: the name describes it well....Italian for "oh my!"

Lamborghini Diablo: devilishly accurate description for that car.

Landd Rover Defender: I'd "argue" it's great name for a go-anywhere SUV.

Mercury Marauder: Anything pirate related is cool by definition, but IMHO the latest version FoMoCo built seemed more like a Mafrauder than Marauder.

Mitsubishi Raider: good solid name but shoulda been on a muscle car.

Oldsmobile Cutlass: Cutlass was a sword famous for being used by pirates, a cutting edge name????

Oldsmobile Toronado: The name appeared to evoke thoughts of a tornado, but it was named for a huge heavy tank that most tornado's couldn't move. :)

Panoz Esperante: elegant Spanish sounding name for a vehicle built in Georgia.

Plymouth Prowler: At first, I thought it was named for Jesda whenever he visits Mandy Moore. But it is a great name

Pontiac Firebird: Certainly a better car name than "well-done poultry" , "Phoenix" or "smoke belching chicken".

Porsche Carrera GT: Carrera is spanish for "race", but I'm not sure it's a great name as Porsche has used it on several different cars.

Rolls-royce Phantom: A cbassic name. But I question it for the same overuse reason as Carrera.

Shelby AC Cobra: Awesome name for a primitive powerful sports car.

Anyone think of other great names?

I've always been a fan of the name Extige. Maybe not because of the name itself, but most definitely because the name suits its appearance and performance of the Lotus very well. A BMW, Merc, Caddy, or Rolls with that name would seem silly.

Speaking of Rolls- I really like the name Wraith

Yes, Wraith is a great name.

Acura Vigor was always one of my favorites.

I love Ford's Galaxie, too. Not only is it descriptive and '60s-space-future sounding, but also sort of timeless and the off spelling makes it more interesting. I really, really wish Ford would bring back Galaxie and Fairlane to replace the dull and lifeless Taurus and Fusion nameplates.

Another iconic one is Imperial. It'd look good on the back of a full size Chrysler now--better than the uninspired "300" (though I realize 300 as well as letter cars have a lot of brand heritage for Chrysler).

I like Eldorado. It sounds luxurious (unless you live near the Kansas town of the same name).

Also, Toyota Soarer and Chaser.

I've always liked the name Trailblazer for an SUV, though the name might be better than the actual vehicle. :)

No to Vigor, Soarer and Chaser.
Yes to Trailblazer, and even our own Pathfinder.
Also like 4-Runner.

Then there is the "famous cars named after the people who built them" category.
Names like Ferrari, Porsche, Shelby, etc.
Perfect last names of people who built historic car companies.

Laser is pretty damn good.

Nominees for worst:
Diplomat
Accord
Civic

They sound institutional, less in a "Presidential limo" and more in an "assistant to the city comptroller" sort of way.

I kinda expected to see "camry" on your list of bad names... ;)

Bad names is a great topic too. hmm. Here are a couple that hit me.

Edsel: naming a car after your kid is bad enough, then combine it with a grill that looks a bit like a woman's hoo-haa and there's a big FAIL

Hummer: many guys associate that name with something enjoyable (ahem), certainly not an ugly brick-like bodied Chevy Silverado or Colorado.

Chevy Citation: GM should have issued a citation to the one guilty for coming up with that awful name.

Element: I think it describes what the Honda marketers were out of...when they thought up that name.

LeCar: bad name and the car itself was so notoriously unreliable, it was described by many as Le POS.

Hello my name is Don,
I am trying to help my Dad get his 2002 Nissan Sentra GXE sedan 1.8L car running.
It turns over but we are not getting any spark or gas. The fuel pump relay is getting
Power from the fuse box. The fuel pump relay is getting power that will run the fuel
Pump when the #2 wire is grounded and the key is on. I am thinking the wire that is connected
To the #2 terminal on the fuel pump relay leads to the ecm. Maybe this wire doesn't have
Continuity or the ecm has malfunctioned and needs to be replaced. Looked for the ecm but I have
Not found it. Do you know where it is located? Would a cam shaft position sensor cause the ecm to
Prevent the car from starting?

I agree. Interestingly, it not only makes one think of beans, the car itself also had an explosive gas problem in the rear.

Toyota has a bunch of crap names.

Tacoma - naming a truck after a liberal crap haven in Washington?
Tundra - wow, you named your truck after arctic grass
Camry - yeah, stupid
Corolla...WTF is a Corolla?
Tercel...WTF is a Tercell?
Corona....Nothing says Mexican beer like a Japanese sh!tbox....
Venza...sounds like something crappy you'd get at an Italian restaurant that smells like armpits and tastes like crap
Sienna....huh?
Celica...somewhat better but only because the 1st and 2nd generation cars weren't complete turds.

Supra is about the only one they got right.

Then again, Nissan isn't much better. Sentra, Altima, Maxima, Stanza.....all Crapola.

What a great thread! My first car was a '93 Probe. We'd go probin' the back roads, or the scene or whatever, with smirks on our faces. The only way to maintain dignity was to point out the pop up headlights... okay, just a shred of it anyway. The car was great fun to drive.

"Laser" haha, with Dr. Evil in there to make sure I hear it correctly in my head!

The Homer! Someone made one eh? Terrible idea and similar execution. I like it! I also like the fictional Lamborgotti Fasterossa. That was a pretty great name imho.

I see the PPG/Dodge M4S Turbo Interceptor on here... loved that car from the Wraith. So, along the lines of named fictional cars, I like the General Lee, Christine and K.I.T.T.

Lil' Bastard is a fitting name for a non-fictional car that killed it's owner.

Dodge has the Dart, which is a nice name (can't say the same for the current car model, but the old one is nice).

I used to want to make a PL sticker and put it in front of the Pontiac AZTEC so they're read PLAZTEC. The bottom half of those cars were built by Rubbermaid I'm pretty sure.

Pontiac has the Solstice. That's a nice sounding name and I like that it is actually a convertible, so a reference to sunshine is kind of appropriate.

Toyota Celica is kind of nice as it vaguely reminds me of acceleration at the same time as hearing someone slur the words "Sell A Car" into Celica. I also like Toyota Soarer way more than SC 300/400.

Toyota Cressida. I like that name. It sounds fancy and it kind of was, power everything, rear wheel drive, four doors... pretty nice.

Tiger Sunbeam is a nice name.

Mitsubishi's Starion is a cool name.

I could go on, I could thumb down a few names here. Are we gonna get a nice list or poll to summarize this important research?

I remember reading the story about "Camry." It was a phonetic translation issue:
The name "Camry" is an Anglicized phonetic transcription of the Japanese word kanmuri (冠, かんむり), meaning "crown".

A Corolla is a set of flower petals:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corolla

Not sure what the hell a Sentra or Tercel is supposed to be.

I suppose that might help explain why you say people are "blooming" crazy for buying a Corolla? ;)

Road and Track did miss a few there, but the list is purely subjectional. Good list, however I thought that names like Plymouth Fury or the Aston Martin Vanquish sounded pretty cool too. How about the Triumph Spitfire?

Like Desert Rat said....Many more... :bigthumb:

I always thought the Cheetah was a good name, even if the car looked like something from the mind of George Barris.
