i've been all over nico and google trying to figure out what possibly could have happened. i haven't tried to tear back into it yet because it got late and i had to be up early for work today, but here's what happened last night.

i swapped an s13 exhaust cam for my s14 intake cam. rotated the cam and gear 4 teeth counter-clockwise, put it all back together. went to start the car, it fired up and idled for about 30 seconds then stalled. tried to turn it over and nothing, almost like the starter is not even turning the crank. i got a random putt from the exhaust here and there, and a smelled a hint of fuel so i stopped for the night before i possibly screwed something up.

i'm going to be opening it up again tonight after i pick up a new vc gasket and my z32 wheels, but any ideas on what could have happened here?

edit - cam installation was done following the jwt guide. all bolts were tightened in the order and torqued to the specifications outlined in the fsm.

That sucks man...

It sounds like you did everything right, sooo...bad starter?

Have you done a compression test btw?

I don't know if you have seen this thread already but it might help.

zerothread?id=326522

Sorry, but that's about all I could suggest. Good luck.

that's what i was thinking. i can hear it spinning, but it's not turning the engine. i maybe have 3k miles on the starter, but with these rebuilt units, anything's possible. i should have the receipt somewhere in my file cabinet, i hope. when i change the vc gasket i may just redo it all for safety's sake. if i get the same result, i'll pull the starter.

Hey Tita, why are you running such a small cam? What are the benifits?

a little bit more oomph in the mid-high rpm range. once i get this all squared away i'm all done with modifying this car. maybe some suspension work, but that's all. i'll focus more on the datsun.

car is in the garage. gotta push it uphill to get out of the driveway. even if we did get it up there, my street goes downhill in both directions.

Ok so stupid ? but you have gas in it right? only reason i asked is cause you said it did start and ran for about 30 seconds and then died. the starter is not going to cause it to die, so you might have two issues.

but good luck and let us know how it turns out.

yes, there is gas in the car. funny you're the second person to ask me that. first thing i thought of was dell tech support "first things first, is your computer plugged in?" lol. starter is good. i've found the problem, the cam broke. not sure how it happened, or why, but it broke. i'm going to put the stock one back in and pray to jeebus that none of the valves on that side bent.

since i neglected to turn off the e-mail alerts, i got all the replies on my phone after i quit for the night. your quote was the only thing that broke my rage and stopped me from smashing my wind shield.

well that and the fact that i bought a set of z32 tt wheels with brand new rubber for $150

Man, that sucks. I was gonna do this mod back before I lost interest in the KA. I still have my 232 exhaust cam, too.

Hope everything works out going back to stock...

Nice, I got some z33 wheels with low mileage tires for $200. Was a good day indeed. Good luck to you.

still couldn't find it last night. i guess i'm going to have to buy one of those stripped bolt removing sockets and replace the lugs. i'll probably just get 4 more acorns and never deal with this crap again.

the only z33 wheel i like are the anniversary wheels and the v.1 track editions. besides, i've been enjoying the stock look. nice big wheels get expensive and you get extra paranoid about theft and curbage.

It was until I let my GF (now ex) drive it for a year...

But I gotta sell it to finance a business idea. Hopefully, it'll go to a really good friend of mine. But if my business plans workout, I'll be able to get another and do both my cars up in the way I envision them... which is pretty frikken dope.

hopefully it all works out for you in the end.

yesterday i reinstalled the stock intake cam, fired it up and i let out the biggest sigh of relief. everything seems to be in perfect working order. well, almost everything. of of the cam cap bolt broke while i was torquing it down. i haven't fully decided on how i'm going to handle this yet.
