I've settled on the classic .243 caliber as a small hunting gun/large varmint gun.

I'm looking for recommendations on a cost effective rifle. Something not stupid cheap(read crappy) but the lower cost the better.

I'd prefer a Bolt action instead of a break open.

I'm looking for around/under $400 for the gun itself with no accessories.

Thank you

I was playing with a Howa last night.

The bolt was really sloppy

I also played with a Ruger and a savage(with accutrigger). The Ruger was IIRC an 18" barrel yet weighed more then The Savage with a 22" barrel.

The Savage had a Jeweled bolt and was extremely smooth.

Both were I think $500 new.

I think that's too much, correct?

ehhh maybe.

where was this at?

the Accutrigger is a very nice factory trigger though.

Savage and Remington however are closing the gap in price very quickly...check out a Tikka T3 as well...dunno what calibers they offer them in...but it's a fine rifle.

.243 is a b****in' round.

After the 7mm family, the 6mm might be my favorite.

I'm currently looking at a Marlin XS7 in .243.

Thoughts on this? It goes for $290 at buds or $340 at the local dealer.

I haven't been able to handle it, but it seems to be the big brother of the 917 which I like.

You should be able to get a used savage around that price, which IMO shoots rings around the Marlin. You're correct though that it feels like a big 917, but I'd recommend you pick one up and sight it a few times to make sure it's really what you like.
