Hey, I just got some gas at the station (ironic), went to start my car and it didnt go. It just clicks everytime I turn the ingition. I thought (hoped) it was just a dead battery, but my mom came and jumped it and it still didnt go, just clicked.

Im almost certain this is a bad starter, but just to make sure its not something else before I spend money, please comfirm my theory...thanks

also, if it is the starter, how easy is it to replace?

if its a manual check your clutch switch and your inhibit relay. To "test" the starter have some one hold the key in the start position while you go slam the starter with a heavy steel bar. If it starts your starter is bad. if it dont check the other to items I listed.

I tried hooking up a jumper cable from the positive battery terminal to the solenoid on the starter and it did nothing...I dont think its a relay, cuz when I turn the ignition the starter does make a click, which means its receiving something-while starting it without the clutch down it makes no noise.

I believe my battery to be in good shape, my lights, stereo and everything else works fine.

I was trying to take out the starter yesterday, I was only able to take out the long bolt on the top, near the transmission housing almost. there was one more bolt in and it had no head...so I will be calling around to shops and see if anyone can get it out.

i also have this very exact same problem with the exact same car, a 1992 240sx..most of the time this will happen after driving for a while, then turn of engine then go back to car like 10-30min later to find out it dont work. Mostly i have to push start the car. Where is the starter located and wut does it look like? same about the solenoid, starter relay, inhibitor switch and the other one mentioned...i dont really know what to look for.

if ANYONE can help..PLEASE DO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

passenger side of engine near the bottom. 2 metal cylinders one large one small. when the car wont start have someone hold it in the start position and wack the starter with a large metal bar or your tire iron if you can get it in there. if it starts bad starter.

yes have someone hold the key in the start position while you tap on that if it starts replace it. like 18 bucks at the dealer.

if thats not the problem then you need to hit the starter while holding it in the crank position. if it starts then replace the starter.

My car had the same problem for about 5 minutes. I saw that there's little rubber button missing from the clutch. the button pushes against a switch when the clutch is depressed, and it lets the car know that the clutch is being pushed, which allows you to start the car. Well, on my car, the rubber button broke and it left the gap that it was supposed to fill. Therefore the switch wouldn't be pushed down when I pressed on the clutch. I haven't fixed this yet, so the way I start my car is by putting the transmission in neutral, and putting my foot under the clutch, and push on that switch. Or I put my hand down there and push it that way. This may not be the same problem you're having, but its worth looking into.

The switch looks like a thick black needle. If you don't understand what I wrote, I'll try to get into more details, just let me know.

If when you try to start it does nothing, no sounds, then its something to do with the switch or the relay. If there is a clicking noise, its the starter or possibly a dead battery. I got my starter replaced, starts fine now =)

bleh, i am hoping that i have something miswired, or either a dead battery..because i just got my sr in and did all the wiring, now when i got to start it it clicks :(. well, after i take a breakfast break, i am heading down to autozone w/ both my battery and my starter. hopefully they'll tell me some good news. i haven't done the testing yet so i'll wait for my friend to get here to tap on the relay and/or beat on the starter. somebody im me on turb0stump if you have any more tests/ways to check to see if it's the starter.

You can try to clutch/push start it, I did with mine and it started...if it starts that way its definitely the starter.
