240sx v8 build

V8 240sx? Sure! If either the chassis OR the engine is non-Nissan (i.e. SR20 in an RX-7 or LS1 in a 240sx), we've done it.

thanks for the info so I can be prepared to have to rebuild them.

my exhaust is fully built all the way back and I am out of money to buy new ones. do you happen to remember where they cracked?

I am going to weld on extra suport brackets to exhaust that I can bolt to head and block to help support the weight. hoping this will take pressure off of the header and help longevity.

If these crack I will build my own so that I can route it directlyto my turbo flange.

would rapping the exhaust with header wrap make them crack faster or slower, or does it matter?

thanks for the heads up

Summit S10 V8 conversion headers flipped around would work pretty well IMO. Or just support the fron of the current ones you have. If they are supported they shouldn't crack.

thanks that is good to hear. I built a support bracket today. both helping support the side where the turbo.using the accesory bolt holes near the block off plate for mechanical fuel pump. used 3/16 in by 2 in steel to build the brace.

wil post pics tomorrow when the exhast is put back onafter I complete welding it 100%.

here is a pic from under the manifold that I took to give an idea of steering column clearance but you can see the manifold and the shock tower clearance.

last weekend I finished welding exahust and intercooler pipingwrapped exhaust manifolds with heat wrap. whatever the thing is called that routes the gas to tank when you fill up. I cut and welded that thing. drilled whole in side of rear fender and it now runs into the trunk so I can connect to fuel cell with ruber hose.

this weekend I wrapped downpipe with heat wrap ,I built my new gauge panel and my dad customized a three gauge pod and mounted it to the dash. cut out bottom of gauge pod and cut whole in dash siliconed the gauge pod to dash so it sits lower and all the wiring will be hidden. left to right in gauge pod:(autometer boost gauge, AEM AFR, Autometer fuel psi)

the gauge panel is built out of t6 aluminum made a carboard template . it is mounted to fatory bolt and screw locations.still need to add a couple of swicthed to the panel and wire but it is finally built.

hazard lights and switch to control the rear winshield wiper.

I love it. you've done all the mods in a very clean fashion. there are other v8 swapped 240's out there but yours is by far the most insanely modified ever to fit the swap. props to you for being original.

I am assuming that you mean the trans crossmember. In the front I am still using the original crossmember, just added a universal motor mount for sbc.that can either bolt or weld to frame rails.

when I need to pull the trans to change clutch I will definately add some. or if it seems necessary .for now I just want to finish.from the beginning of the planning to starting building 10 months ago it has been about two years and I still have a couple months to go.

Just want to finish it at this point with out losing the integrity of my work.

I have got most of the wiring done.9 new gauges.speedo ,tach, oil pressure ,fuel pressure, fuel level , water temp, volts, AFR, boost

strater turns over, fuel pump works, switches work.

will be starting for first time this weekend.

end up cutting out the roof hoop and the part of a pillar barsthat are visible above the dash. the dash bar and the bottom half of a pillars are still welded in. stupid megan racing seats sit an inch higher than the stock(hard mounted with out the sliders). I altered driver seat bracket so that the seat bolts right to bracket. used the roof hoop and top half of the a pillar bars to make these door bars cut and welded the piecestogether to make single bar.

got all but the radio working again, got some help with power windows windshield wipers and door locks. new piaa mutifunctional lights wired in so that parking lights work and turn signals.all tied in to original wiring. made so I can leave the piaa lights switch on all the time and it is activated by the original light switch for parking and regular lights.

me and my dad and I almost finished the trunk. aluminum sheet cut to fit and overlap the frame rails all the way around.will be metal screwing aluminum sheet down to the support structures so it does not vibrate and in to frame rails.

<tr><td>

built a cover for the battery terminals that bolts down to the weld in battery case. lined the inside with 1/16 in rubber sheet for electrical insulation. accidentally touched my wrench to the battery case or rollbar when tightening down the positive terminal one day.that was fun. after i managed to let go, the wrench was still arcing to battery case.

go my summit heater mounted in the vacant backseat area on passengerside.

more pics soon

drove car for first time this last weekend. it is awesome.

hit 6psi at around 3 to 3.5 rpm and it feels like warp drive.love it. my dad said the acceleration feels like his bosses Mercedes SLR. contemplating license plate SLRKILA heres to a $400,000 dollar car car is not even tuned yet. runs rich and need to adjust timing.

never mind the mass amount of bondo on the hoodfirst time working with bondo put too much on at once and it is still drying.

I'm curious why would you assume straight line car? that is the second time i have heard that.maybe it is my lack of knowledge about cars but I don't get it.Is it the weight of motor ,carburetor, size of turbo?

it will be my daily driver . don't commute much.

By installing an iron block SBC motor you effectively changed the F/R weight ratio that the 240 used to have. Many people consider this sacriligious...

I however do not.

There have been plenty of SBC platforms that have performed very well. It's simply a matter of tuning the suspension. If you can take an old camaro with a solid rear and make it grab 1.2 G's on the pad, then you can do it with the 240.

I used to have a 79 Monte Carlo...talk about driving a snow plowel. But I totally loved it. So It's all about perception IMO. If you like what you have, then who the F@#$ cares what anyone else thinks?

I agree about that the who the f%@# cares part. Just curious. so i guess people do not take into consideration these facts about my build and just assume.

shifted motor back 5 inches, aluminum heads , intake ,waterpump, pulleys, even the pistons and rods are aluminum, 17 lb flywheel , lightweight quicktime bellhousing, tko 500 trans is lighter than the t56 a lot of people are using, by about 21 pounds. tko500 is 95 lbs dry and i think the t56 is 125 dry. mini starter and alternator. shaved weight everywhere I could afford to. battery is in the back , frp bumper and front fenders, no ac components at all mounted on the front of car or under the dash. pulled the heavy flip up headlights and motors, replaced with frp/carbon fiber pieces from raceonusa with little piaa headlights. summit racing heater mounted in back seat. ac and heating were pulled so there is another bit of weight pulled from front end of car. put the turbo where the battery had been but is centered over the frame rail. roll bar adds another 100 or so pounds to the center and rear of the car. speaker box in trunk is another 40 or so.

camaro pulled 1.2 g's that is awesome.

besides my car might not be that could for straight line as the rear end is a 3.54 with a 3.27 first gear. might be a bit slow off the line.not sure a fully built 5.5L motor would make a 3000 lb car (estimated with me in it)go all that fast.

You'll probably be well below that 3000lb mark. Your car will have plenty of getup and go!!! even if you make 400 hp, in these cars, thats a pretty fair amount of juice from what i've heard. (I have yet to drive my 240 hatch anywhere!!!)

no i think the motor swap is awsome... jsut the wing u made there reminds me of a straight line car ... just see alot of people not take the time to get a car like that to run right to DD it... all the props if you are going to... should be one hell of a fun ride.....

EDIT...

plus the cage in it... not really a DD think... only the hardcore think i guss.. just not the most safe thing to ride in all day

i like the wings on the cars running 200 in the 1/4 ,one of the inspirations for leaving the support brackets visible and not sheeting it in to look like a saleen.

i agree with the cage and it being a dd that is why I cut out the roof hoop and used it to make the low door bars. I also attached the main hoop a little farther back so it is with in 6 inches of head but not right above. that way there is not hard metal to bump into with anything vital.only metal me or passenger could possibly bump into would be the door bar down where it connects to the A pillar bar.so an ankle might get slammed a little but even that bit of bar has padding on it.

trying to make car fast and safe. it will be my dd partially just because i went about 10g's over budget already and can not afford to get a dd.oops.
