I have a '92 240sx, i was wondering if anyone has tried to just flip the exhaust header and then mount the turbo that way? it seems quite long, but i would like to ask before i go about welding a new one.

You talkin about flipping the stock exhaust manifold over??

That would NEVER work. The bolt holes wouldn't line up with the studs. The turbo would never bolt to it with out major mods. The turbo would sit higher that the hood of the car.Plus it's a cast manifold that's usually rusted to hell. Would be very difficult to cut and weld.

you would have to cut up the stock manilfold and reweld it. It being cast iron though, the welds wont hold. you will waste time and money trying this project.

Rewelding stock manifolds DOES work, if you know how to weld cast iron. The trick is heating it up to a certain temperature and then cutting/welding it to your liking. What you'll need to consider is the geometry of the runners, and how you will weld the turbo flange to them. Technically it should work, and my friend has done a few rewelds like this, all working just fine so far. I'm probably going to be rewelding my SOHC manifold for a turbo application this summer. But it's also quite cheap to get some flanges, some pipe bends, and weld your own log-style manifold, since neither is expensive. It will probably be better that way, but if you want to save a little money (the difference won't be large at all, probably 100 bucks at the most), you can reweld your stock header.

or you can just buy this

and just have to port out the opening and weld. Its only $250.

It is possible to weld a cast iron manifold..look at the realnissan manifold. It is cast iron with a steel flange. I'm sure there is a certain way of doing it but it is done. But in any case, I agree with S13KA24E....just get the JGS manifold. It would be much easier in the long run.
