hey everyone...i've been having a few problems with my transmission but the other day it finally took a crap on the freeway...

i've been experiencing the common throwout bearing noise as well as a whining that gets louder the faster you go in all gears. i recently noticed a growling noise coming right undernearth the shifter.

now here comes the really bad part. i was driving home on the freeway when the growling noise under the shifter started getting really noisy. all of a sudden the shifter popped out of 5th gear. i put it back in 5th only to have it pop out 30 seconds later. i tried to put it in 4th....major gear clash...slowed down and tried to put it in 3rd...no dice....so i try putting it in any gear with the clutch depressed...i can't get it into any gear...feels like the linkage is sticking on something...i have to really jiggle it to keep it in "neutral"

so now i'm stopped on the side of the freeway and i finally jiggle it into 1st and try to drive off. when i try to drive off the clutch engages very violently almost like i'm launching when i'm driving off very slowly and cautiously...plus i can't get it past 2nd gear. so i stop and call AAA and they tow my car to a local shop.

the funny thing is i'm taking manual transmission's at wyotech right now. and i have several bad transmission problems. i was wondering if you guys could give me any input on what you think the problems are. i'm thinking that the transmission is incredibly low on gear oil (because my speedo sensor keeps popping out and leaking gear oil) plus my shift linkage is waaaay out of adjustment and the whining might be my throwout bearing going bad. any ideas will be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance!

After reading that horror story. The best possible advice I can give you , Junk that trans and get another one. You could always take that trans to class for experamental purposes but if the internals are as bad as you describe it will cost a pretty penny to get all the gears, syncros and bearings. Could almost buy a new one for that.

If you have another trans rip that one out of your car and throw the other one in.

Most tools needed are pretty common hand tools. Getting to the bell bolts up top is a bit of a challenge. If you remove the trans rear mount and let the trans hang down you have better access to those upper bolts. Just make sure you mark the drive shaft where you unbolt it from the diff or its center point to avoid vibration from imbalance. When you have all your bell bolts out and you slide it back about an inch you need to rotate the starter boss 90 degrees to the passenger side to get clearance before you slide it all the way out. Most importantly use a freind to help drop it and lift the new one in.

i just put transmission in it is easy bell housing bolts a 14mm, there are like 5 plugins, and the slave is 14mm, transmission mounts are 19 mm and just unbolt drive shat at rearend 14mm,and unbolt universal(carriar bearing between driveshafts) joint 17mm i beleave and pull out, alot easier then unbolting from the front yoke, took me about 45 minutes to swithch trannys, oh yea make sure u unbolt shifter plate inside the car to clear floor board when removing transmission
