this is kinda a question but more of a finalazation to a never ending question i have had. first off i have a 90 fastback 5 spd. when i bought tha car last year 1st and 2nd gear were really loud and i thought it might b tha clutch so i put in a new stock clutch and tha sound was still there. i know now and have known it is my transmission. i do have a transmission on tha way (bought for 165.00 sent to my house off ebay) and i plan on puttin that in with a street clutch. my question is do tha 240sx trannys tend to sound like a bunch of rocks inside tha casin alot??? i have been readin threads and i tend to see ppl complainin about it and was wonderin. thx.

yea ha ha i have been scolded b4. like i said i have read on a bunch of threads ppl mention that there transmission sounds like "rocks rollin around inside" or "like sheet metal bein thred throught a shredder" etc... and mine is doin the same. id like to know 1) if its common for the trannys to do this 2) what causes this

it's the transmission..mine did the same thing then finally broke..i took it apart and the rattling was actually pieces of gear teeth ....replace ASAP..before it's too late..lol

usually lack of oil or water contamination is the cause. lack of oil usually stems from the switchs passing fluid and being left unrepaired(replacing the switchs) which lets the fluid get to an undesired level therefore causing bearings to run dry and wear prematurely. its fairly simple to overhaul the transmission with a FSM and a decent hydrolic press. water contamination is rare but can happen if car is partially submerssed in water allowing fluid to enter trans through the vent.

yea neutral switch, fifth gear switch, and so on. some have 4 some have 5 switches in all. also the speedo pinion seal can leak.

sounds to me like pilot bushing...only happens after car has sat for awhile and you first few clutch operations and it goes away?

my car does it all tha time despite. it does sound like metal grindin in there too so i have been thinkin and do believe that it is tha teeth bein grinded down. i know for a fact that my level is good cuz i check all tha time and i have just recently changed tha transmission fluid in it and it still makes tha same sound, and when i looked at tha drain plug good sized metal fragments were attached to it.
