So here is the deal...my husband, who is new the 240 world...bought a car and everything was disassembled...me being the good wife, is trying to help him put it all back together haha. Anyways...I mostly just do the researching and the reading.

So he is on the part where he has to put the upper and lower timing chains on, and do the timing. Something is not right and we can't figure out what it is. The lower timing chain is on...and everything appears to be at TDC, using the screwdriver method. The exhaust dowel is at a 90 degree angle pointing upward...and the intake dowel is slightly to the left. The lobes on both cams are pointing outward. We have been using Jim Wolf's guide for installing cams...as well as various you tube videos, and the Chilton Manuel. The thing is...no matter what we do...the upper timing chain will not go on.

I posted some pics...any ideas of what may be going on? or if we are doing something wrong?

Okay, so we have determined that it may be easier to install the upper timing chain if we take at least one of the sprockets off...However, even in the beginning we tried this, and the bolts for the sprockets will not budge at all. We know its a 24 inch socket..Any ideas how to safely break the tension, without damaging the camshaft or head?

If you're talking about the bolts that hold the sprocket on to the cam - look back on the cam a few inches you'll see a section that is hexagonal like a bolt head. You can use a box wrench there to keep the cam stationary while removing the bolt. Hope this helps... good luck.

ye if you havent figured it out yet you gotta hold the cam with a box wrench and break the bolt loose. also make sure you rotate the cams a little, with a box wrench, to line the sprockets up. also try with out the tensioner on i just remove the top bolt and lossen the bottom and let it hang. makes putting it back easier
