I just bought a 240sx, the seller told me the timing chain needs to be replaced.. we tryed to start it turns but wont start.. would the timing chain do that? If so is it a DIY fix and how long would it take?

yes that would cause it not to start. you can replace the chain by yourself if your good with your hands and can read and follow directions. a novice should be able to complete this job in a weekend. the problem here is that 240s have an interference engine, this means that the valves and pistons occupy the same space at different times. these parts are kept in time by the timing chain. if the chain snaps the valves fall out of time and can impact the piston heads. this is usually catastrophic as the pistons either bend the valves or break them off. sometimes the valve goes through the piston. either way the motor would need to be completely rebuilt. a good way to determine if this has happened is to either peer in through the oil fill hole and look to see the cam turn when you crank the motor or to remove the head cover and look to see if the cam turns when you crank the motor.
