i have a 1995 SE 240sx with 201,000 miles now i know that there could be some power losses due to exhaust leaks, header leak, and so on. However, i have replaced the exhaust from cat back and the intake as well with a cold air intake with K&N filter. I read already in the how to section that the AIV could be the problem. The instructions simply stated that it's "between the exhaust and the intake box" ok, ive removed the intake box and im not sure what "exhaust" they are referring to, but apparently its really easy to clean this out. My question is; does it even exist anymore now that i have a cold air intake?? My car's 1st gear is sluggish and real slow at getting on it.

Between looking at your engine picture and your mods I would say that you most likely eliminated your AIV. It was a hose that ran from your stock filter box into a black box that was mounted on the your driver's side strut column from the box back it was a metal tube that went into your header. Like I said I don't see the box in your picture and I don't think that most aftermarket headers have a spot for the AIV tube to go into. The AIV just dumps air into the cat to get it to heat up faster so its only use is emissions so not having won't effect the way that your car runs.

nissan eliminated the AIV on 95-98 240sx models. so you never had it to begin with.

200,000 mile motor can be sluggish for a lot of reasons. but just because it has 200k on it doesnt mean that your exhaust gasket is leaking, etc.

first.... whens the last time you did a good tune up? (plugs, cap, rotor, fuel filter, wires)

second.... it could be your exhaust, but i doubt gasket would make it struggle that much in first, most likely the cat is plugged up if its exhaust related.

third... Do you burn any oil? if your rings are getting worn out you will see a loss in power there. have a shop do a compression check.

fourth... is your car an automagic? could be having problems shifting, not engine power related.

good luck

I just replaced the fuel filter on my car and it made a significant difference. My car is a 92 but i only have 126,000 miles on her. When I took the old filter off the remaining gas inside the filter that leaked out was filthy.

Because it was so blocked up I was having hesitation under WOT. Not enough gas getting to the engine under hard acceleration

First, get new valvecover gaskets. Second, do a full tune up and compression test, as already mentioned. See what that gets you.

p00t, his car is a 5spd. Notice no automatic thing on the wheel well above the filter? That little sensor thing that makes the transmission shift easy and stuff? Yea, thats not there. And notice the appearance of a clutch master cylinder? ;)

My s13 is sluggish too, but the problem seems to go away after the car is warmed up after driving for a while. As soon as I sell my other car I'll be replacing the plugs, wires, fuel filter, and maybe do the seafoam treatment also.

well after driving around a lot tonight ive decided that my cat is pretty much shot. When i reve it there is a very loud popping noise then it goes down to about 1 grand. Not only that but the engine idles hella rough. Im just thinking that with my next check ill buy a hot shot header and a stock cat. converter and that should clear up the problem quite nicely. By the way, i was planning on having my car compression tested sometime in the next 3 weeks. We'll see how that goes.

That is completely retarded. Sorry to be mean, but your car has obvious running problems not related to a header or cat or exhaust and you're going to spend your check on those things?!?! Take it to a shop, get the codes run, do a tune up, do regular maintenance, and THEN you may clear something up. Adding a header and another can will not help anything at all. Get the PROPER work done the FIRST time, please.

dude hold on back off here a second. First off, ive been to a muffler shop and they already TOLD ME i have an exhaust leak right at the exhaust manifold. ok, second i now have the loud popping noise where the cat is and there are huge visable scrapes on the cat itself. Weather that is a cat problem or a seal problem in that area, it won't matter if i get the header and a new cat. And in closing ill remind you that i never once mentioned the check engine light was lit indicating there would be available codes through the onboard diagnostic system. I just wanted to clear up some rough idleling and some weird noises. Thanks for the 2 cents though
