1991 240sx seems like its hitting the rev limiter at 2500 rpms

1991 240sx ka24de. Right after i did a hard launch this problem started. The car runs fine until I hit 2500 rpms, then it fluctuates drastically like its bouncing off the rev limiter. Its also idling fairly high, like 1500 rpms. Is this maybe an ecu problem, or something mechanical? im not really sure where to start diag since ive never encountered this problem

turns out the mafs had come unplugged. now i know for next time
