Not really sure why it would take hours to connect the mounting plates. For the most part as long as you're trying to mount a single din stereo, I've had zero problems with getting the stereos to line up with the grooves on the plates. The plates just screw into the dash assembly in the front so I'm not too clear as to where the issue is. The time it takes to mount a stereo in the mounting plates should be all 10-20 minutes max from pulling the trim pieces, pulling that center piece and getting the harness adapted to your particular stereo (the adapter for the antenna as well), and all back together.
The wiring is simple enough also, but in the event of theft, yeah there are some savages that just rip out whatever they can get so you could also have a short further down the harness than you expect.
You had the active stereo, there's a write up on how to get around the amp wiring that's found on the "active stereo" and send out a signal from the deck and will run on aftermarket speakers or even from the speakers that are "active" as well.
