Does anybody know how to wire new speakers to the s13 doors.. I heard you have to use the original amp in the door and i did that... I hooked the new speakers to the red and gray wire but it didn't work.... Any answers?

NM......... I figured it out.... Some of my wires behind the stereo in the middle console were crossed which kept my speakers from working . I didn't even have to use those stupid door amps. I also used some thick plastic that I got from ACE hardware to cover the back speakers so that when it rains there's no chance it'll get on my speakers and short em out.... Here are some pix.

so how big of a speaker can you go and retain the stock door panel with out modding it? Or is it just a matter of depth?

Does the door panel sit flat over your guys speakers that are already done?

my friend has mananged to put 6x9s in the doors. but they are over the stock grill.

theres nothing bigger than 6" (besides for 6x9s which are too big anyway) so i wouldnt worry about it

This is a very good find. great job guys:bigthumb i got some more questions?

1. Is it a good idea to make the speaker mounts from the template with sheet metal and put dynamat on the sheet metal? and/or between the speaker mount and the door?or is MDF good enough for this application b/c i dont feel that confident enough with the MDF

2. if i were to get 6.5 in the front and 4x6 in the rear, would the fronts be a little overpowering for the rear?

3. and, a little off topic, where is a good place for a sub in a 240sx hatch

once the whether here in jersey starts to get warm, im goin to do my system, but its just so damn cold brrrrrrrrr

thanks a lot guys at Nico

Spiffy - Most people use MDF since it is very solid. Just follow what width to get so it doesn't flex. Sheet metal would be that much hard to cut and shape. The fronts are suppose to give you more sound stage than the rear. The rear just to fill in what the fronts don't give out. Subs wise it is up to you. But to save space I've seen guys use ported boxes that has the back slanted a bit to sit flush against the rear seat. The ones from eBay are pretty much the same dimensions as my design. If you want to spend that money that is your opinion but you can get the MDF for 1/4 of that price and make several of them to sell.

I am taking a break between my college courses and thought I could make your design more visible.

Rember ya'll cut on the black line, not to one side of it. That will give you the best representation of dangers design.

Mdf would be just fine to use. I used 1/4 hardboard and it was fine. The sheet metal idea might work out ok. I say just try it and see how it does. ....rear speakers are just used for fill in. The fronts will always be louder. As for sub placement I'm not sure. I have been out of the bass thing for years. My guess would be custom enclosure in the spare tire well.

ok... so i bought the ebay ones and installed my system4X6 component in the rear and bolted right to the frame, some dynomat between the speaker and the car, sounds great

now the on to the front speakers... im using Infinity Reference Series 6.5 speakers and the top of the speakers is against the door panel, my passenger front speaker i think blew because of it....

im using a 1/4" pvc thing from ebay, its sturdy and holds greatbut wtf do i do about the top of the speaker being against the door panel, even when i pull the door panel away from the speakers, the quality of sound is better, so there is definetly an effect happening

Help please

Grille sure does fit right over the speaker. You wouldn't even know it was there.

Yeah I bought the mounts from ebay and they work really well. There is no rattle or anything and even though nobody is gonna see the mounts; they look professional and clean!!!........ Now if they only made mounts for rear s13 coupe speakers to support 6x9's; that'd be the shiznite!!!

well after spending all day trying to do this on my own i came up with somewhat of a conclusion without a template. maybe it's a bad idea tho, you guys tell me.

i mounted the speakers behind the grill using the screws that hold the grill in. just the top and bottom screw. i got a bit longer screws to make sure it held. in addition utilizing the third unused screw (to your right if looking from unpretty side of the door) you can use it to place a bracket in. this will make the speaker face towards you as the original stock speaker had.

after much trial and error this is the solution i came up with. thoughts? or should i just use a template?

i can post pics tomorrow if you'd like. also i want to mount the tweeters as high on the door as possible right?

any idea for a place to put the crossover? thanks

Curious. How many people have installed the 6.5 speakers without an amp? Is there a significant difference. I know the amp will make the biggest affect though.

An aftermarket deck running the stock speakers vs an aftermarket speaker will be a HUGE difference. Unless you bought crappy crappy CRAPPY aftermarket speakers made of paper towels.

My stock speakers sound 10X better with my new deck, but only to mid volume, if that actually. Alot of songs depending on the base make those old 4x6s just crackle. You can tell the power is there but the speakers can't take it.

an amp running the speakers may or may not give you better results, its all in your setup and what you're running. I've heard shiatty amp'd speaker setups and nice deck/speaker combos.

AMp to power a small sub gives good results (with of course changing every factory speaker in the 240)

emkkrem-if you take off the door panels and remove the plastic that holds the 4x6. this template takes over that plastic template

as for the aftermarket deck with stock speakers vs aftermarket speakers- any aftermarket speaker/deck with a 1 year old car makes a HUGE difference even with a car with bose in it. running an amp decreases your chances on blowing your newly acquired speakers because you have the chance to have an HP XO(high-pass cross-ver) which will cut out 80db and below sound which the panel speakers arent really meant to have, hence the invention of a sub. Warning to those who have components, you might want to get an amplifier, it'll make a huge sound difference I PROMISE!

*edit* to the OP, great template! where were you when i needed this 2 years ago?
