Information I got from a google search:

Blue smoke is caused by engine oil entering the cylinder area and being burned along with the fuel air mixture. As with the white smoke, just a small drop of oil leaking into the cylinder can produce blue smoke out the tailpipe. Blue smoke is more likely in older or higher mileage vehicles than newer cars with fewer miles.

How did the engine oil get inside the cylinder in the first place? The car has many seals, gaskets, and O-rings that are designed to keep the engine oil from entering the cylinder, and one of them has failed. If too much oil leaks into the cylinder and fouls the spark plug, it will cause a misfire (engine miss) in that cylinder, and the spark plug will have to be replaced or cleaned of the oil. Using thicker weight engine oil or an oil additive designed to reduce oil leaks might help reduce the amount of oil leaking into the cylinder.

Blue smoke = oil

Unless you add blue coloring to white smoke.

When the engine warms up, metal expands.

Nah, I just made that up! Metal's metal man! It's motherf***ing rock solid!

A little blue smoke never hurt anyone, just check your oil level frequently. And like Amtk240 posted, use a thicker weight.

Valve stem seals. There is a write up on how to do it here somewhere.

You will want to rebuild the engine once you get it out.

The cost of that all depends on if you do it yourself, or pay someone. Labor is a biaaatch!!!

Rebuild? porque?

Don't rebuild shizz, replace your head gasket, rings, rod and main bearings and that's it. All that is gonna cost you soooooo much $$$$, you might as well buy another car. I like the Mazda Protege5, go with that!

If his rings are fried, doing that ^ will do nothing.

I'd say 2K would be a bargain basement deal. But you're probably looking at 3K plus.

His rings are teh problem! I'm just telling him to replace his bearings because he's going to have the engine apart anyway and those things wear over time as well, and his head gasket is a given.

You cant say what it is. He has tried a compression check yet. If it fails, yes ring, if pass its as simple as valve stems and a gasket set.
