240sx over drive sensor?

i am about to trade for a 1991 240sx with the 2.4 KA

The only real problem with the car is that it cant shift into 5th gear.

The owner says it needs an over drive sensor. I i cant seem to find any information on these everytime i look it up all i see is over drive switches

any help would be sweet

You keep saying 5th. I assume we are talking about a 240sx automatic transmission. It has 4 gears.

I've never dealt with the issue of it not going into OD, but I know some have. Should be able to search the forums for people with that issue. But I don't recall ever hearing of an OD sensor.

Definitely should not need a sensor to shift into 5th gear. Either it will go in or it won't. If it won't then the transmission probably needs to be replaced.

No sensor... Trans needs nothing to work .... needs a trans.

He sent me a link to the part in the 240sx manual for the site and the part is called

O.D (5th) position switch

5th gear is consider an overdrive gear. This is because the ratio is lower that 1:1, nothing electronic about it.

All that would help to do is allow the cruise control to work (assuming it is hooked up correctly). If the transmission isn't going into 5th gear the transmission is messed up.

You absolutely don't need that switch. The ECU pays no attention to it in the code.

That is for an auto transmission.

And again, no you don't need any switch for a manual transmission to go into 5th gear, the transmission must be screwed up if it is not allowing you to shift into 5th.
