DIY(do it yourself) will save you money and give you valuable if not priceless knowledge and experience that can carry on to other vehicles. With the parts you spend repairing a 300zx and parts youll be spending on the 240sx to upgrade it depends on both what you want and what your willing to spend. As an example that gives 240 an edge over the 300: having a complete rb20det swapped into a 240(includes wiring, all the parts, and labor) you will spend around 2800-6000 depending on where you have it done(ex. Spencer sells rb20dets decent mil complete with trannsmission for 1200+400 and wiring, install, and running for 900) as for the 300zx adding tt can be in the ball park of 1000-3000 plus labor depending on many circumstances like quality, used, who you hire to install, etc. Just that you still have to maintain the other parts in the engine bay like the transmission and engine which is close to double and even tripple the prices compared to 240sx parts (due to many factors like surplus, demand, etc.). I hope this help and feel free to correct me as I am not an expert but have been reading and studying for a while now. Good luck
