hi, i'm new to getting a car and was thinking a used 240sx would be nice as my first car. an automatic, preferably 1995 or after model. but i'm not sure how much mileage is alright. i mean, i know that lower is better, but i don't wanna spend more than 6-7 thou. am i expecting too much? any suggestions or opinions on getting a used car would be appreciated. any other cars i should look into? i just want to drive a fun (and cheap?) car for a few years until i get a new one. thanks.

Welcome to NICO. Where we pity the fool who mess with Mr. T. An auto s14 should be no prob. to find. As far as milage the lower the better. Listen for timing chain slap. 6-7k should get you a nice 240sx. Have fun. Use the red search function at the top of the screen it will help greatly. Have fun. :batman

what's timing chain slap?as for the mileage, anything over 100k is too much? i've searched autotrader.com and most were over or not specified.

Well I'd say average milage is around 120-135k. The timing chain slap is when the timing chain guides wear out they break off and the chain slaps the water jacket. If it goes unchecked then it could wear a hole and mess up the engine. I'm not sure how often it happens in the newer DOHC engines but like I said run a search and I'm sure you will find all the info you need. Also check http://www.240sx.org they have a really nice faq section.

You asked for other cars have you considered a prelude, or integra? Perhaps a sentra se-r, or infiniti g20. just some sugestions. All in the same price range.

thanks for the advices guys, i'm surprised how fast the responses are. anyway, i guess i should have asked what timing chain is. (i don't know anything about cars) but i'm sure i can easily find that out in other posts or google. i'll look into sentra sr-e. i'm trying to stay away from civic, prelude, and integra. that would be way too stereotypical for my kind. ;)

Our cars (240SX) don't use the traditional timing belt that needs to be replaced at specific increments. Our timing chains however are a PITA to replace if you diy, or very costly if you go to the dealer (~$1000).
