Heres the deal 1990 240sx Fastback w/ KA24E

Often when I try to start it, it clicks but will not start or turn over. It'll just click. Then finally after a few attempts it will start. Now when it did finally start, it sounds really weak, and the car shakes a lot due to the motor shaking. The exhaust makes a put put noise. Also it smelled pretty bad, no smoke though. Also the throttle response is terrible, and it gets really bad when u first start going but then it calms down.

Video of it running.thanks

You have two seperate but possibly related problems, starting and running.

It sounds like you are running on only 2 cylinders. Yes you can run and drive on only two and in fact we unknowingly ran ours on only one for a few minutes one time.

What have you done so far? Have you changed anything before this started happening? Has the car sat for awhile and then started this when you went to use it?

While running unplug each injector one by one to see which ones are working and which aren't. Once you find the bad one start by checking hte plugs , wires etc for those cylinders.

For now your problem mostlikly is either: bad injector(s), bad plug(s), bad wire(s), bad cap and / or rotor. also could be fuel filter or fuel pump but they are ar down my list.

No smoke is a good thing right now. Check the above and let us know what you have tried on your own and we can go from there.

Well I checked the oil, and it was really low. I'm due for an oil change. I put in a quart and it ran good this morning and fired right up. Then after sitting for around 8 hours I tried to drive it again, it started right up, and then it ran like it did in the video completely different from this morning.

Then i put a little more oil in after that, and it ran good again. Then I drove it for 10-15 miles and then turned it off for 5-10 mins. And then it didnt wanna start after that and it clicked a few times then it finally started.

This weekend i'm going to replace the spark plugs, wires, change the oil & filter, change fuel filter w/ z32 fuel filter, new distrubutor cap w/ rotor, and also run lucas gas treatment.

If worse comes i'll try to put in a different oem fuel pump, and check the timing.

thanks

Wait a minute. When you add oil through the oil fill at the top of the engine it runs good for a while but when the oil has time to run down to the bottom of the oil pan it runs like crud?

Think about that for a minute. It sounds like you may have an oil pump going bad. Not that hard to change. AutoZone lists them for ordering at $75 to $120. (your milage may vary)

Do you have an oil pressure gauge installed?

If your filter is cloged then the oil change will help. Otherwise it won't hurt. Also check/reset the timing after the tune up and before the fuel pump.

I know it's a lot of reading but I need help. Thanks

Alright I replaced spark plugs, spark plug wires, did an oil change w/ new oil filter, replaced fuel filter with z32 ff.

One thing I noticed was when I went to replace the fuel filter, the bottom rubber hose attached to the bottom of the fuel filter and fuel line was cut up pretty good. So I replaced it.

It's been running better, BUT i've gotten the "not want to start clicking" again once so far. And when it was done clicking and finally did start it ran like **** like in the video above. It sounded like a go cart and was put putting like in the video. Then I rev'd it up to 4-6k and it went back to normal for a little then soon after it ran like **** again.

thoughts:fuel pump, oil pump, fuel injectors, fuel injector harness?

How do I check all of those things? Do you think a good seafoam or injector cleaner would do it good? When I had it the first 3k miles I ran lucas fuel/ injector cleaner. What else can I do?

Any ideas?

Thanks
