Here we go, As all of you know that we just finished installing a VLSD from a 95 Infiniti J30 into my car.

Here is all the information you will need. I will try to write up as detailed information as I can possibily can...then I will post the pictures of the install and put the captions under them to explain them.

It is true that IF you have a 95+ 240sx and you get a 95+ J30 diff, you DO NOT need to do any modification what so ever to your car at all!!! regardless weather you do or do not have ABS.

Yes, the J30 diff is about quarter of an inch longer because of the ABS sensor but it does not matter. Fits perfectly.

Since you have the diff on the side, it is a good idea to change the fluid in the diff. The fluild in my J30 diff was very dirty so I'm glad I changed it. I used 75-90W Moblie 1 gear oil. People say use Redline.. i could not find it so I used Mobile 1... it still is one of the best..

I also put LSD additive in the diff. It comes in a tube like thing, you can get it from any auto part store. it's a good thing to add that as well.

Next... Jack up the rear end of the car and put it on jacks! (duh) :)

before you do anything, just slide under the car and just take a look at what you have to do. There are 4 bolts holding the Drive Shaft to the diff. 2 bolts on the front bottom of the diff holding it up the the frame of the car. 2 bolts on the rear of the diff holding it steady. And finally 6 bolts on each axles...

IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE THE SERVICE MANUAL FOR THE TORQUE SPECS!!!If you do not have one.. e-mail me and I can get a hold of the specs for you.. One of the guys brought it down for me and it was a great help!!!

Next take all the bolts off the axles and slowly take the bolts off the rear of the diff and under the diff...

make sure you have a jack under the diff... pry the diff out of it's place.... this will be very tough to do since the axles have a cone thing coming out of it which goes inside of the flanges of the diff.... TAKE YOUR TIME!!!

Once you have the diff out of the place.. do all of that in reverse to put the J30 diff back in!!!

It is very very simple to do, you just have to take your time. Don't try to hurry up and you will be fine. The drive shaft bolted up perfectly like it was supposed to go there.

One thing was that I have Dual N1's and for some reason the DS sits a little lower than stock and so it was rubbing on my resonator and so I had to lowe my exhaust down about half an inch or so... other than that.. it is perfect..

After driving it for 3 days... the car feels great... it does have a little slower acceleration due to the high gearing but over all it is much faster because you are putting all that power to the ground.. This is defnetly biggest bang for your buck!!! I recomend getting one ASAP!!!

now for the pictures.... ***please do not post untill I have posted all the pictres***

A special thank you goes out to DAEDALUS.. the Infiniti Online Tech..he is the one in the red shirt... he helped me out with the whole thing!!!!!! and thank you for everyone else who was there helping me hold the diff and stuff!!!! much appriciated it.. :)

needed more help so Daed came and helped out trying to get the diff out

this part is much harder than it looks... You have to compress the part that attaches the axles to the flange of the diff and get it out

The reason it won't come out is because of the cone I mentioned earlier...

almost there.....

just letting the diffy fall ont he concrete... taking a chunk out of it....

the diffy all out... Notice the two holes ont he front side.. that is where the two botls will holt it up against the body of the car...

This is where my camera ran out of juice but all you have to do is take the diffy and put it on the jack and jack it up in it's place....

ENJOY!

Sir, Kind sir can you please resize them....

Hey i move the diffy ... and garrett was also helping....

and my idea to place the weight since you did not have a wood...

FYI: Becareful when the Diff is out... it can fall down anytime, good thing Anand was able to get out of the way when it dropped...

So guys who are doing this... try to have an industrial jack or a wood that will help support the drop of the Diff and last becareful again....

Public Announcement: There was no animal hurt while changing the diff...

Great write up! The install would have gone quicker with less finesse and more brute force. Letting the diff fall down was the quickest step of the day. If anyone needs a used diff with only a small dent, you know who to call. I'm sure Anand will cut a fair price on it! Just to add, there's also a 3rd nut on one of the rear studs in the crossmember that holds down a ground clip.

I just got a new/used diff last Friday! I found a 95-240sx WITH ABS in a junkyard here in Orlando and got the diff for 250 bucks. I installed it at my buddies shop it took about 1 hour with a lift and air tools. The J30 is a great Diff and is real good for a turbo application but I like the 4.086 that comes in the S13-S14. Black doesn’t you’re car feel complete now I now mine does!

I'm still searching. Unfortunately, mine has to come from a 90-96 300ZX n/a.... (So I can get the 4.08 ratio).

My car does have a tad slower acceleration but over all I think I shaved off a second or so because it pulls way harder than before and I can def feel the car gripping down on the read much much better... so the 3.something gearing is not bad at all...

Which also makes the speedo 4% slower...

ex: When your speedo reads 100, you're actually going 104..

I just swaped out a 1998 240 VLSD with a out of my 98, and put in a 1990 300zx na in it. It seems a little slower off the line, but I thought that it would be a stronger rearend, plus I did the 300 brake swap on all 4's so i used the upper control arms and the e-brake setup ( still have yet to work on getting the e-brake to work) I still have the other rearend what are your guys thoughts on the rearend I should use? Which everone I use, the other is for sale. I also have almost all the rear suspension out of the 300, even the whole rear crossmember.

If you get the 300zx diff get the axles to. swap the diff and the axles their thicker on the Z car and should fit into an S14 I dunno about an S13 5 lug only!

The first thing anyone should ask for when they call the junkyard is "Do you have a 240sx from 95-98 with ABS"?

Doesn't the diff have somewhere that says vlsd on the differential! I just brought one today out of infiniti j30 but not sure if it is the vlsd. Does the regular lsd work to?? Drew

If it's an LSD, there will be an orange sticker somewhere on it. Also, try turning the part that connects to the drive shaft, both side flanges should spin in unison if it's an LSD. Or you can try spinning one of the side flanges, and the other side should spin in unison. If none of this happens with your diff, it's an open differential, not an LSD. I'm not sure if all J30's came with an LSD, all I know is that the J30 LSD is the R200V.

Hey Anand, is 230 a fair price for a 95 J30 diff?
