From my earlier post "Trouble with my 240SX". Everyone was correct, it was a bad fuel injector in #1. Replaced it and is running great. However I still have that tick, tick, tick
when she is running, drives me crazy!!!! My mechanic change the oil and put in a lucas product that will hopefully lessen the noise. Said to drive her 100-200 miles and see if the lifter quiets some. He said he won't work on the lifter because he would have to buy a couple of special tooks to do the job and he may never use them again.
Recommended that I take it to Nissan and see how much it would cost to put new shims in her. Does anyone have a suggestion on a product or technique to quiet down the lifters, will it work??? or do I just work on her myself. How hard is it to replace the shims, or should I have Nissan work on her and get her fixed
Any recommendations or suggestion would be helpful.

Thanks

25 people have read my post, and no one has a suggestion or possible point to start
Maybe this is not the forum that I thought it was.

If you have the stock engine in your 93, then there are no lifters. Timing chain rattle is a common cause of some serious noise on these engines. Check this link:

If it is not the obvious problem (timing chain rattle)... it is bucket lifter shims. It makes a VERY noticeable ticking noise.

I got a re-manufactured head and the cams must have been reground because the bucket lifter shims weren't gapped properly. So i just swapped out my old bucket lifters and cams and annoying ticking was eliminated.

I am not sure where or how to get the shims but they are fairly easy to replace if you know how to pull your cams.

Thanks for all the good information :yesnod
Sound seem to be coming from the 4th cylinder area
Dont know if timing chain rattle travels to back of engine via the cam
I thing it may be the shims

what do you guys think
only vehicle I have, so need to fix this weekend

Thanks

what year 240? i have a 1990 sohc that i swapped out with a dohc but with the sohc i had a bad tick aswell and turned out to be the hydraulic lifters. they run around $45.00 a piece and are fairly east to put in but the cost wasn't work it so i just replaced the whole motor with the dohc for $100 more.

Its a 1993 240SX. only has 73,000 miles, original engine, but has been sitting idle for 4 years
started it up and let it run for about 15-20 minutes twice a month. Sometime I would drive it a couple of miles, I am in the process of completely replacing anything that needs it.
Have gotten rid of all my leases and am planning on just using this car for the next year or two since its bought and paid for. My wife loves it

Thanks

Well checking for incorrect gap is easy, simply acquire a feeler gauge and start poking them underneath the cams (with the lobes away from the buckets).

Intake measurements are: 0.31mm-0.39mm
Exhaust measurements are: 0.33mm-0.41mm

If they fall in between the ranges then they are good. If you find one off, take the cam off, remove the bucket lifter shim, and read the imprinted number and add/subtract the difference and order new ones. Piece of cake. But you will probably have to do this twice because you have to take things apart to check then put it back together to buy the new part since this is your only vehicle.
