First off would like to say I'm that new guy to the forums. Just recently bought a s13 hatch. I know this topic has been brought up, but can't seem to get straight answers. I wanted to get some Hids for my car but I keep seeing write ups on h4 housings. Would I be able to get an H6 hid kit and just install it? I know the light will be scattered but I'm ok with just having a better light output. Thanks.

You won't be able to buy a HID kit and just put it in. The S13's come with sealed housings so whenever you blow a bulb you replace the whole headlight assembly. What your best option is to buy the Cibie housing and using a HID kit with that. The cibie's take H4 so its a perfect fit and you won't blind people like you would with ebay ones.

As I suspected, so your saying those ebay 7x6 h4 housings are garbage? I think it's silly the whole assembly has to be replaced when bulb blows.

A picture is worth a 1,000 words right?? These are two diff sets of ebay housings with ebay H4 6,000k HID bulbs/ballasts. Had to modify the glare shields on the bulbs to enable the up to the right cut so I could read the signs on the side of teh road because the cut off was SO GOOD. Occasionally I have to turn the lights on/off a few times to get both ballasts to ignite properly. What do you expect for $50 lol. Bright as f*** btw and blue sleepy eye's are cool as s*** though not quite legal lol

Image

the wierd looking orange lit area above the cut off is from the high beam hole in the glare shield that I blocked with duct tape initially and then finally figured out how to make a aluminum foil block off. I have no pictures of what it looks like after my modifications to the glare shields but it's nice. High beam works too btw.

Rsmithdrift, I'm sorry but that cutoff is pretty bad, and the reason people shouldn't buy cheap housings and hid kits. As seen from your pictures, light is leaking past the "cutoff" line on those housings.

Here's a picture of a good cutoff.

If you want better light output, spend the money on Cibies or Raybrig headlights that actually comply with safety regulations. Or put in the work to retrofit some proper oem xenon headlights.

Hey Rsmith I'd be happy with that output since I'm not picky with precise cutoff and 6k seems like the kelvin I'm leaning towards too. So most likely I will have to mess with the lens huh? So AAV is that picture with Cibies or Raybrigs? I do see the difference in cutoff though.

Previous picture was of a oem xenon headlight.

Raybrigs would be better if they didn't have silverstars in them.

Please have the courtesy to not blind other drivers with cheap inferior ebay products.

Here's a review about cibies

And you can find more info on raybrigs if you search google.

I will admitt those cibies are nice... But what I have really aren't blinding AT ALL... it was pitch black and that is a white wall, I took those pictures to help me decide which housings to use and like I said, I fixed those lit orange looking area's.

That said what little leak their is is MUCH less than what their is with the stock sealed beams.

This ANOTHER (3rd) set of ebay H4 Housings with silverstars in them. This was my first set up that was destroyed in an accident 3 years ago

This is ebay h4 on left, stock sylvania sealed on right...

Same wall same distance, both ebay h4 (the old ones from 3 years ago)

Seriously the stock sealed beams leak light like a mofo. Lit the entire garage door... The new housings now that I fixed the light coming out that hole making the orange leak are better than those were.. So yea. Not blinding. I actually feel a complete cutoff like the ones on the cibies and the stock HID you posted are dangerous because the light is SO restricted that if something is above the light (like a sign or if the road goes up hill) then you can't see it AT ALL and it's terrifying. My current set up is borderline scary on backroads when using low beam because of the hills and the sharp cut off as is.
