I was wondering that same thing. Do auto and manual trans cars have the same rear gear? Maybe the auto is lower. That is the way it is in Corvettes I know. Maybe could swap gears if that was the way it was but I really don't know, maybe somebody else does.

Auto and manual trannies very rarely have the same set of gears (mostly because the manuals almost always have more gears..duh). So...autos are usually spaced a bit longer between gears, making 3rd gear in an auto longer than a 3rd gear in a manual. If you want longer gears, change your final drive gear to a 3.917 for example. You can get that out of a J30 of certain years. Do a search for LSD, there have been many discussions as to what cars come with which rear ends.

I've heard twin turbo 300zx's have 3.42 or something compared to the stock 240sx's that, both auto and manual, have 4.08. I've heard of swapping LSD's out of 300zx's to 240's. My 240 already has one but how much difference in drivability would this cause. I figure these gears would significantly lower RPM's on the highway(my 240 w/ a manual is about 3000 @ 63). Has anyone tried this?

you could do it, but man you would hate your acceleration, and shifting between gears would more than likely drop you out of your powerband, which sucks for racing, street or otherwise.-chet

kinda on and off the subject question here..when u guys are driving not really hard but like street and u let off the gas does it feel like ur pushing down on the brakes? This happends to me all the time just wondering if its normal.. ow yeah and my throttle pedal is a little losse if that maeks a diffrence.-edgar

The rear gear does not affect what RPM the next shift puts you. You will still hit the same powerband. But a taller gear will transmit less torque to the ground. Nissan Motorsports USA sells different ring and pinion gears. But if you go taller, chances are you won't be going as fast, and you won't get very close to shifting into 4th at all. My suggestion, make the shift to 4th. You'll lose more speed hitting the rev limiter than you will if you shift. An easier, more effective option would be to get a retuned ECU to raise the rev limiter.

That's not the point.... it will shift at the same RPM... but getting there will take longer if you have a higher final gear ratio. Putting in a higher ring gear will have a similar effect to losing power.

You will still hit the same powerband.

Yes, but it will take you longer to get there.

This would be the cheapest and best solution unless you care to spend a boat load to rework ALL of the gears not just the ring and pinion.
