How are you supposed to get the cable to stay on the fuel door gizmo?I just replaced my old broken cable with one from a junkyard, got everything to work, got almost the entire interior put back together and the cable pops off the fuel door latch! Its the smaller side (towards the front of the car) that pops off.I'm tempted to get it back on and zip tie it on, but its all plastic, so it'd probably break from the side load that'd put on it.

I assume your talking about the piece of the cable that keeps the door closed? is the plastic retainer that holds it to the body still there?

No, I'm talking about the cable's connection to that part. The cable snaps into the two arms and is supposed to spread the arms to release the latch. Mine pops off of one of the arms. I'm gonna check and see if I routed the cable through the right holes over the wheel well. It feels like something is pulling upward on it.

Its where the cable snaps into the latch mechanism. The cable sheathing stops at a little gromment-looking thing that snaps into one arm of the latch, then theres another grommet that snaps into the other arm and the cable continues to the hatch striker.

Anyway, I have it sort of working now. The hatch doesn't release with the cable, but I can just use the key for that. At least now my fuel door works and I don't have to drive around with it open all the time. Maybe some day I'll just take it to a dealer and let them deal with getting this horrific bit of engineering to work right.

burnt, i tried to email you through the forums but it said that you didn't want to get emails.....what is the cable setup like for this?

My cable has apparently disappeared back into the body somewhere, and I need to get this all redone.

you have to nearly gut the interior of the rear of the car to gain access to the cables.

I'm assuming your problem is with the fuel door latch, and if you're lucky and the nut just came off the fuel door latch part of the cable, you can get hold of it to fish it back through without taking anything apart.

If your car is like mine, theres an access panel all the way in the back on the right hand side (theres an interior light just above it). You can get to the cable and fish it back through with some mild profanity ;). Do NOT remove the fuel latch from the cable or bend the cable too much (see below)! If threads come through, you're in luck and can just get a new plastic nut from a junkyard 240.

If theres no threads, you'll have to take a lot of interior panels off and remove the rear seats to run a new cable. The cable crosses the car under the rear seat, so if you start there, you can figure out what needs to be removed.

I'm pretty sure the reason I still have problems with mine is because when I went to the junkyard, I removed the fuel door latch from the cable and tried replacing just that. Then I found my cable was broken where it attaches to the latch, so I went back to the junkyard and got the same cable I'd taken the latch from. Since then I've found pics of the cable and none have shown the latch separate from the cable, so I guess they're a unit you're not supposed to disassemble. Mine works to open the fuel door, but if I try popping the hatch with it, the cable pops out of the fuel door latch. One of these days I'll get a new one and install it right, but for now, I'll just use the key when I need to get in the hatch.

sounds like a royal PITA....might be one of those that i will just take to get fixed, but no time soon....it's just not that important to me, because as long as i'm careful i can pry the fuel door open with a key and not scratch any paint

Uh oh. If you're having to pry the door to get it open then the cable is probably shot. When my mom owned my car it got like that because one of the grommets on the cable that the latch clips into broke off. Rather than have her prying on the door every time she gassed up we broke the latch.

Edit: Then again, it might be an adjustment at the lever.

the latch isn't even visible...it could have just fallen back inside the panel for all i know
