its as if people dont even think before posting.
sigh 240 gen is becoming hopeless
This is the main issue with 240 GC. People have to remember that this forum in particular is ground zero for new people with 240s or people that are looking to get into the 240 world. So you're going to have reposts ad naseum. You're going to see people who post up completely misinformed threads, or ask a question repeatedly. It's expected of gen chat. WD made a good comment in private that that form of activity is less tolerable in the tech forums, but it's expected in the gen chat boards.
I usually let a lot of those threads slide because I want to make the board slightly more noob friendly than our older members would probably want. The main reason is to generate traffic flow and grow our userbase. We all had to start somewhere to learn, I was fortunate enough to have a mentor that had 35+ years of wrenching under his belt to teach me and make me look less like a noob. However, if you want to see just how misinformed I was when I first started, take a look at some of my original posts. I couldn't even spell convertible right.
What truly makes 240 GC the pit it is today is the backlash from members to the noobness that gets funneled in. We have people who come in, ask a question that could be searched for, and then they get flamed and harassed. I will say that our search function can be finicky at times. I just searched for my posts and I was popping up with posts in 2002, when I didn't join until 2003. So our database of older posts is a bit wonky.
All I ask for is that our older members try to help out the newer people in a constructive way. Instead of saying "search noob", just say "try searching for -topic here-". If the OP comes back and says I can't find it using those keywords, but you found his answer with the same keywords on the first page of results, then you can be a little agitated.
Think of the staff. We have to bite our tongues when we see some of the people that post up here. I've been around for almost 6 years now. I've seen a lot of topics and posted in many of them.
Maybe I need to redo our FAQ and make it more informative. It was a project I was going to work on, such like I redid the SR FAQ, but I never got off the ground and finished it. Maybe with the wave of unrest I'm seeing currently, it would be a good time to get off my lazy bum and do it.
