Car: 1994 Nissan 240sx Vert

Post

I have a 1994 240sx all stock vert. I failed my emissions test pretty bad a couple of days ago. I replaced the cat and O2 sensors already. I ran a diagnosis on it today and the ECU gave me a code 35 which is the EGR sensor/valve. The car idles high at times also. I'm new to most of this stuff but I have a pretty good idea on how the EGR works. Any suggestions on how I should tackle this problem 1st? Here are my results from the test. It ran Super rich so I'm pretty sure EGR is the problem...

High Speed
HC (PPM): Standard – 132; My Reading - 268 - Fail
CO (%): Standard – 0.73; My Reading – 0.59 - Pass
NOx (ppm): Standard – 945 My Reading – 3355 - Fail

Low Speed
HC (PPM): Standard – 136; My Reading - 239 - Fail
CO (%): Standard – 0.76; My Reading – 0.45 - Pass
NOx (ppm): Standard – 1045 My Reading – 2607 - Fail

Any help would be appreciated!!!!!!!!

Remove your EGR and clean it out. Or purchase a new one. Cleaning usually does the job unless it is stuck. Its very fun to reach and get at (sarcasm).

You could just stick it to the man and dump a bunch of dry gas or ethanol in your tank just to get it to pass. Eff em.

I'm positive that you have two issues but maybe with the same root cause.
Your HC is high - this would be caused by running too rich or an ignition problem - the EGR system has nothing to do with HC levels.
The soot caused by running rich is what has plugged up the EGR system and caused the high NOx levels.

I often have issues with the EGR system in my SR20 powered NX2000 - different engine but I'm pretty sure that the EGR system has the same controls, and what usually happens is that there is soot in the tube running from the EGR tube to the BPT (Back Pressure Transducer).

Too bad it's not a diesel, otherwise I'd say pee in your tank.

If you just plank the money down on a new catalytic converter, you will definitely pass. This is only if you have the coin and don't want to mess with it too much, tho.
