240sx cruising problems

i have an 89 240sx 5 speed with about 110000 miles. when i'm cruising on the highway for extended periods of time, every once in a while it stops accelerating or even staying constant speed. it's like it pops out of gear into neutral. the stick is still engaged in gear. then when i press the clutch all the way down and back up it goes back to normal. it seems like it happens in bunches, like it won't just happen once on a trip. it will be fine for a long time and then do it like 5 times in a matter of 20 minutes and then not do it for a long time again. i also want to mention that my speedometer and odometer works sometimes and not others. i was wondering if maybe one of the sensors on the transmission is causing both of these things or if they're totally not related at all. thanks
