That's an awesome gift. For a complete replacement (for the most part) I'd suggest getting the Injen kit.

For the injen and the cold air adapter you are looking at $300 plus shipping. The problem is, with a home made short intake, theres no way to know if you can get away with just getting a cold air extension...

One thing to look out for though is that the 89-90 KA24E engine uses a different intake than the 91-94 KA24DE so make sure you get the right one, some companies only cater to the later year.

My favorite modification that I did with the orriginal engine was an ACT performance clutch. It made the car way more fun to drive but your looking at about $500 after installation if you have a shop do it. Honestly most people arent getting much of a gain from the cold air extensions on the intakes from what I have read. I had the injen short ram and it was slightly noticeable power increase but my friend had the AEM unit and it seemed to flow a whole lot better.

Looks like they still don't make that for the 89-90 though (AEM).

This is a good read about performance air filters. Some guys on Supra forums I believe it was tested most of the top brands of cone style filters and found very different results. K&N and Apexi rated very high.
